Reels of Gold app play gives you Barcrest’s Rainbow Riches spin-off with two sets of reels on one screen: a 5 × 4 main set beside a 5 × 12 colossal set. Lines and RTP both depend on your stake, reaching 100 paylines and up to 96%, so the settings you choose on your phone matter more than in most slots.
Barcrest released Rainbow Riches Reels of Gold in 2016.
A 5 × 4 main reel set sits next to a much taller 5 × 12 colossal set.
Low stakes play fewer lines at a lower RTP; higher stakes unlock up to 100 lines and up to 96%.
Two reel sets make landscape the more comfortable way to play on most phones.
UK rules remove autoplay and cap stakes at £5, or £2 for 18–24s.

Reels of Gold app layout: two reel sets on one small screen
Reels of Gold is built around a dual-screen idea. On the left is a regular 5 × 4 set of reels; on the right is a colossal set that is five reels wide but twelve symbols tall. Both spin together, and wins can come from either. Symbols such as stacked wilds can carry across from one set to the other, linking the two.
On a desktop monitor there is space for both. On a phone, the casino app has to shrink everything to fit, and this is where orientation matters more than usual. In landscape the two sets sit side by side much as the designers intended. In portrait the game rescales so both remain visible, which means noticeably smaller symbols, especially on the tall colossal reels.

Barcrest links several settings to stake size in this game. At the minimum stake, published descriptions say fewer lines are active (20) and the return is around 94%. Stake more and the game switches to all 100 lines, with RTP rising towards 96%. The game’s help pages show the exact stake thresholds for the version in your app.

Over 200 spins, a 2-percentage-point RTP gap on £40 of play is worth about 80p in theory. On £200 of play it is about £4. That gap is real but small, and it never justifies staking more than your budget allows. The RTP range glossary entry explains why one slot can show several figures, and our guide on how to find a slot’s RTP in an app shows where to look.
Losses are the likeliest result over time at any stake. The RTP is an average across millions of spins, not a forecast for your session.
Reels of Gold features: free spins and random extras
The main bonus is a free spins round triggered by landing three or more scatter symbols, drawn as balloons. Instead of a fixed number of spins, you pick balloons to reveal how many you receive. Separately, a random feature can strike on any spin and add extras such as moving blocks of wilds, payout multipliers or stacked wilds that transfer to the colossal reels.
Some versions also include an option to gamble a free-spins award for more spins, with the risk of losing it. Whether that appears in your UK app depends on the version, so check the rules. Our gamble feature glossary entry explains how these options work and why they add risk.
How to play Reels of Gold in a casino app
Log in to the casino app and check that your account verification is complete.
Type “Reels of Gold” into the lobby search. It may be listed as Rainbow Riches Reels of Gold.
Open the game and rotate to landscape if your screen is small.
Tap the information icon to see the paytable, line settings and RTP by stake.
Set your stake. The app will cap it at £5, or £2 if you are aged 18 to 24.
Tap spin for each round; autoplay is not available in Great Britain.
If the free spins round triggers, tap the balloons to reveal your spins, then play them out.
Our general guide to playing slots on your phone explains stake controls and paytables if this is your first mobile slot.
UK rules in the Reels of Gold app version
Stake caps of £5 a spin (25 and over) and £2 a spin (18 to 24).
No autoplay, even though some overseas descriptions mention it.
At least 2.5 seconds per spin, with no turbo or slam-stop.
No feature buy for players in Great Britain. Premium or Big Bet-style modes described for other markets may be absent or adapted, and any that appear still sit within the stake caps.
Small returns below your stake are not celebrated as wins.
Because the game’s volatility is not consistently published, it is best to plan around the stake and RTP alone. At 50p a spin and the UK minimum of 2.5 seconds per spin, you could stake up to £12 a minute. Over 100 spins that is £50 staked, with a theoretical cost of around £2 at a 96% RTP. Real results will vary much more than that, so decide how much you are happy to spend before you start.
The app’s own tools help: a deposit limit, a time reminder and a loss limit can all be set in a couple of minutes. Our casino app limits guide walks through them on iPhone and Android.
Playing the Reels of Gold demo
Demos are available in many UK apps but only once your age has been verified. Because the two reel sets look so different on a phone, the demo is a sensible way to choose between portrait and landscape before you play for money. Demo balances are play money only and never withdrawable.
Two linked reel sets make each spin look busy and varied.
Random extras can arrive on any spin, not only in the bonus.
Higher stakes unlock all 100 lines and the top RTP.
Drawbacks
Cramped in portrait on smaller phones.
Lowest RTP at the lowest stakes.
Volatility is not clearly published.

Frequently asked questions
What is Reels of Gold?
Reels of Gold, also listed as Rainbow Riches Reels of Gold, is a 2016 slot from Barcrest, the British studio behind the Rainbow Riches series. It uses two reel sets side by side: a 5 × 4 main set and a 5 × 12 colossal set, with up to 100 paylines. Features include a balloon-picking free spins round and random extras such as moving wilds and multipliers. You play it inside licensed UK casino apps rather than a dedicated app. Our Barcrest mobile slots page covers the wider series.
What is the RTP of Reels of Gold?
The RTP is up to 96%, and it depends on your stake. Published figures put the return at around 94% at the minimum stake, rising towards 96% at higher stakes when all 100 lines are active. Casinos can also run different versions, so the information screen inside your app is the reliable source. RTP is a long-run average and says little about a single session. Our guide on how to find a slot’s RTP in an app shows where the figure is usually listed.
How many paylines does Reels of Gold have?
Reels of Gold has up to 100 paylines. At the minimum stake, published descriptions say 20 lines are active, and higher stakes unlock all 100. Wins can land on either reel set, and the game’s paytable shows exactly which lines are live at each stake level. More lines spread your stake across more combinations; they do not change the fact that the game keeps an edge over time. Our paylines glossary entry explains how lines work in general.
Is Reels of Gold better in landscape?
On most phones, yes. The game shows a 5 × 4 reel set beside a 5 × 12 colossal set, and in landscape they sit side by side at a readable size. In portrait the game shrinks both to fit, so symbols on the tall colossal reels become small, especially on compact handsets. Tablets and unfolded foldables handle either orientation comfortably. Try both in the age-verified demo to see which suits your screen. Our guide to portrait vs landscape mobile slots gives more general advice.
How do free spins work in Reels of Gold?
The free spins round in Reels of Gold is a game feature, not a casino bonus. It triggers when three or more balloon scatter symbols land, and you then pick balloons to reveal how many spins you get. Some versions offer an option to gamble the award for more spins, which can also lose it, so check the rules in your app. Any winnings from the round are paid at the stake you were playing. Our mobile slot features guide explains scatter-triggered rounds in more detail.
What is the maximum stake on Reels of Gold in the UK?
You can stake at most £5 a spin if you are 25 or over and £2 a spin if you are 18 to 24. These Gambling Commission limits apply to all online slots in Great Britain, whichever app or website you use. The stake selector in the game stops at the right level for your age automatically. Remember that higher stakes in this game unlock more lines, but that is never a reason to exceed your budget. See UK stake limits on mobile slots for details.
Can I play Reels of Gold for free?
You can play the demo once a UK-licensed casino has verified your age, which has been compulsory since May 2019. That means creating an account and passing identity checks before demo play is available. Demo credit is not real money and wins cannot be withdrawn. The demo is particularly useful for this game because it lets you test how the two reel sets look on your phone. If the demo is unavailable, our page on demo mode verification explains the usual reasons.
Does Reels of Gold work on older phones?
Usually, yes. The game runs in HTML5 inside the casino app, so it does not need the latest handset. With two reel sets and frequent animations, though, older or budget phones may load more slowly or grow warm during longer sessions. Updating the casino app, closing background apps and freeing storage tend to help. The minimum iOS or Android version is set by the casino app, so check its store listing. Our page on casino apps for older phones covers common fixes.
