Barcrest mobile slots are the Rainbow Riches family and other British-style games from a studio that began near Manchester in 1968. Now part of Light & Wonder, Barcrest makes slots whose RTP often changes with your stake, so on a phone the most useful habit is checking the rules screen at the stake you actually play.
Barcrest started with two staff in 1968 in the Manchester area and released its first game, Invader, in 1970.
It has been owned by Light & Wonder since 2011, when the buyer was still called Scientific Games.
Rainbow Riches, launched in 2006, has grown into a series including Megaways, Pick ’n’ Mix and Reels of Gold versions.
Typical RTPs run from about 94% to 96% and are often linked to stake size, so check the figure at your stake.

Barcrest: a British machine maker turned mobile slot studio
Barcrest is one of the few slot names with genuinely British roots. It began in the Manchester area in 1968 with just two staff, and its first game, Invader, came out in 1970. For decades it built machines for pubs, clubs and arcades, which is why so many of its online games still carry the language of fruit machines: features, trails and bonus pots rather than cinematic intros.
In 2011 Barcrest was bought by Scientific Games, the American group that renamed itself Light & Wonder in 2022. Under that ownership Barcrest became the studio behind some of the most recognisable slots in UK lobbies. Our Light & Wonder page covers the wider group, which also owns brands such as WMS, Bally and NYX.
The Rainbow Riches family on mobile
Rainbow Riches first appeared in 2006 and has since become a whole series. Each version keeps the Irish theme and the leprechaun but changes the reel engine underneath, so it is worth knowing which one you have opened.

The original Rainbow Riches is built around three bonuses: Road to Riches, a trail that climbs towards a top multiplier; Wishing Well, a single cash award; and Pots of Gold, where you pick a pot. Rainbow Riches Pick ’n’ Mix lets you choose features before you play, Reels of Gold runs a standard set beside a giant set of colossal reels, and Rainbow Riches Megaways moves the theme onto the Megaways engine with far higher volatility.
Stake-linked RTP: the Barcrest quirk to understand
Many Barcrest slots don’t have a single RTP. Instead the return to player changes with your stake, typically somewhere between about 94% and 96%, and the rules screen shows a table of stakes and their matching figures. This comes from Barcrest’s machine heritage, where returns were often set in bands.
A worked example shows why it matters. Suppose a game pays 94% at low stakes and 96% at higher ones. Over £100 of total stakes, the theoretical cost at 94% is £6 and at 96% is £4. That doesn’t mean you should raise your stake to chase a higher percentage: a bigger stake means you lose money faster in absolute terms, even at a slightly better rate. The sensible approach is to choose a stake that fits your budget, then simply know what return that stake carries.
Open the Barcrest slot and set the stake you plan to use.
Tap the menu or paytable button inside the game window.
Scroll to the RTP or return-to-player section of the rules.
Look for a table of stakes and find the row that matches yours.
If no table appears, the game has a single RTP and the figure shown applies at every stake.
RTP is a long-run average across millions of spins. A higher figure doesn’t make a win more likely in your session, and the house edge applies at every stake.
How Barcrest slots look on a phone
Older Barcrest titles were converted from desktop, so they usually prefer landscape, with the bonus trail running along the side of the reels. On a phone held upright that trail can shrink to the point where the numbers are hard to read. Turning the phone sideways restores the full layout. Newer releases, including the Megaways version, were designed with mobile in mind and are more comfortable in portrait.
Reels of Gold is the trickiest on a small screen because it shows two reel sets at once. On a compact phone, landscape mode and the largest text setting your app allows make the colossal reels easier to follow. Our guides to portrait vs landscape mobile slots and casino app accessibility have more tips.
Barcrest volatility and session budgets
Barcrest’s range spans quite different risk levels. The original Rainbow Riches and Pick ’n’ Mix are medium volatility with modest top prizes, while Rainbow Riches Megaways is high volatility with a top win of 12,500 times the stake. In practical terms, £20 at 20p a spin is 100 spins, which on a medium-volatility game usually means a steady mix of small wins and losses, and on the Megaways version can mean a long quiet run followed by a feature or nothing. Our page on volatility explains why.
UK rules that apply to Barcrest mobile slots
Barcrest’s games are built for the UK market, so the 2021 slot design rules are second nature to them: no autoplay, a minimum of 2.5 seconds per spin, no turbo or slam-stop, and no celebration of returns below the stake. Your balance and net position stay visible.
Stake caps: £5 per spin for players aged 25 and over, £2 per spin for players aged 18 to 24.
No bonus buy for players in Great Britain, so features are triggered on the reels only.
Demo play is available only after age verification.
Bonus wagering is capped at 10x since 19 January 2026.
The stake cap interacts with stake-linked RTP: the top band on some Barcrest games may sit above your legal maximum, in which case it simply isn’t available to you. Our UK stake limits on mobile slots guide explains how apps apply the caps.
How to find Barcrest mobile slots in an app
Open your casino app and tap the search icon.
Type Rainbow Riches to see every version the app carries.
Use the provider filter and choose Barcrest, or Light & Wonder if Barcrest isn’t listed separately.
Open the info panel and confirm the developer.
Save your preferred version to favourites.
There is also a brand called Rainbow Riches Casino, which is a casino operator rather than the game; our Rainbow Riches Casino app profile explains who runs it.

Frequently asked questions
Who makes Rainbow Riches?
Rainbow Riches is made by Barcrest, a British studio that began in the Manchester area in 1968 and has been owned by Light & Wonder since 2011. The original slot launched in 2006 and has since grown into a series that includes Pick ’n’ Mix, Reels of Gold and Megaways versions. Each keeps the Irish theme but uses a different reel engine. Our Rainbow Riches guide covers the original, and Rainbow Riches Megaways covers the high-volatility version.
Why does the RTP change with my stake on Barcrest slots?
Many Barcrest slots use stake-linked RTP, a design that comes from the studio’s machine heritage. The rules screen shows a table of stakes with a matching return for each, typically between about 94% and 96%. Raising your stake to reach a higher band isn’t a good idea, because you lose money faster in pounds even at a slightly better rate. Pick a stake that suits your budget first. Our RTP range entry and finding a slot’s RTP guide explain how to read these tables.
Who owns Barcrest?
Barcrest is owned by Light & Wonder. The American group bought it in 2011, when it was still called Scientific Games, and renamed itself Light & Wonder in 2022. Barcrest continues to release games under its own name, and in some app lobbies they appear under the Light & Wonder filter instead. The group also owns brands including WMS, Bally and NYX. Our Light & Wonder page and providers hub explain the wider picture.
Is Rainbow Riches Megaways different from the original?
Yes, quite a lot. The original Rainbow Riches is a 5×3 game with 20 paylines, medium volatility and three classic bonus features. Rainbow Riches Megaways, released in 2019, uses six reels of changing height plus a top row, giving 324 to 117,649 ways to win, with high volatility and a published top win of 12,500 times the stake. It also has a published 96% RTP. Our Megaways slots apps page and Megaways entry explain the engine.
Do Barcrest slots work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. Barcrest slots load inside UK casino apps on iPhone, Android and tablets, because the game is served from the supplier’s platform into the app’s game window. Older titles often look better in landscape, while newer releases are comfortable in portrait. What decides access is the casino’s lobby, so search before depositing. Our iPhone casino apps and Android casino apps guides explain installing apps from the official stores.
Is Rainbow Riches Casino the same as the Rainbow Riches slot?
No. Rainbow Riches is a slot series made by Barcrest, which appears in many different UK casino apps. Rainbow Riches Casino is a separate casino brand that uses the name under licence. Playing the slot doesn’t require that particular casino, and that casino offers many other games. Always check who operates any casino app and its licence before you sign up. Our Rainbow Riches Casino app profile and guide to checking a casino licence cover this.
Can I play Barcrest slots for free?
Some UK apps offer demo versions of Barcrest slots, but only after your account has passed age verification, which has been required since May 2019. Demo credits can’t be withdrawn and have no value, so demo play is mainly useful for learning features such as the Road to Riches trail before staking real money. Not every app offers demos. Our free casino apps guide and demo mode entry explain the rules.
What was Barcrest’s first game?
Barcrest’s first game was Invader, released in 1970, two years after the company started with two staff in the Manchester area in 1968. For decades Barcrest built machines for UK pubs, clubs and arcades before moving into online and mobile slots. That heritage is why many of its online games still use bonus trails and fruit-machine language. Our fruit machine apps guide and history of casino apps put that heritage in context.
