ELK Studios mobile slots

ELK Studios mobile slots are feature-heavy games from a Stockholm studio founded in 2013, led by the Pirots and Wild Toro series, and they play in UK casino apps on iPhone and Android. This guide explains ELK's signature mechanics, why some of its best-known games publish a 94% RTP, what X-iter is and why UK players do not see it, and how to find the games in an app.

Key takeaways

  • ELK Studios was founded in 2013 in Stockholm and holds Gambling Commission account 40844.
  • Its signature mechanics include Avalanche, Free Drops and walking wilds; the Pirots games use bird collectors.
  • Pirots and Pirots 2 publish an RTP of 94%, lower than many popular slots, so check the rules screen.
  • X-iter, ELK's paid feature-entry mode, is a form of feature buy and is not offered to players in Great Britain.

Who ELK Studios is

ELK Studios is a Swedish slot developer founded in 2013 and based in Stockholm. It trades through two companies: ELKAB Studios AB, which is licensed in Great Britain by the Gambling Commission under account 40844, and ELK Studios Malta Ltd, which holds a Malta Gaming Authority B2B supply licence (MGA/B2B/605/2018) issued on 27 February 2019. Reference listings show more than 120 slots.

ELK has a reputation for doing fewer, more elaborate games rather than a high volume of simple ones. Many titles have sequels, so the catalogue reads as a set of series: Wild Toro is now on its third game and the Pirots series has reached Pirots 5, according to the studio's own site.

ELK Studios' signature mechanics on a phone

Most ELK games combine two or three recurring ideas. Here is how each one shows up when you play on a phone.

MechanicWhat happensOn a small screen
AvalancheWinning symbols are removed and new ones fall into place, so one spin can pay several timesEasy to follow; the action stays on the reels
Free DropsFree-spin style rounds where symbols drop in rather than reels spinningWatch the counter at the top or side of the grid
Walking wildsA wild moves one position each respin until it leaves the gridClear in portrait because the wild is large and animated
Bird collectors (Pirots)Birds move around the grid collecting matching gems; the grid can expandBusy on a 6-inch screen; landscape or a tablet helps
Growing waysExtra rows add more ways to win, as in Nitropolis and CygnusSymbols shrink as rows are added

These ideas link to general slot features you will meet in many games, such as cascading reels and ways to win. Our mobile slot features explained guide compares them across studios.

The Pirots series: bird collectors on a mobile grid

Pirots launched in 2023 and became one of ELK's best-known games. Instead of paylines, a group of colourful birds hops around a 5×5 grid collecting gems of their own colour, and the grid can grow to 8×8. Pirots 2 starts on a 6×6 grid, again growing to 8×8, with birds collecting amber. Both publish a maximum win of 10,000 times the stake. Pirots is rated medium to high volatility and Pirots 2 high.

Because the birds move individually, a lot happens at once. On a phone in portrait, an 8×8 grid of small gems is the most crowded thing you will see in an ELK game. Turning the phone sideways, raising display zoom or playing on a tablet can make each bird's path easier to follow. The result is decided when you press spin; the animation only shows it.

Pirots and Pirots 2 both publish an RTP of 94%. That is lower than the roughly 96% many slots publish, and it changes the long-run cost noticeably. See the section on RTP below.

Wild Toro, Nitropolis, Cygnus and other ELK Studios slots

SlotLayoutWays to winPublished RTPVolatilityMax win

Cygnus6 × 4, up to 8 rows4,096 up to 262,14496.1%Medium–high5,000x stake
Nitropolis6 × 44,096 up to 85,155,84096.1%Medium–high10,000x stake
Pirots5 × 5, grows to 8 × 8Bird collectors94%Medium–high10,000x stake
Pirots 26 × 6, grows to 8 × 8Bird collectors94%High10,000x stake

Wild Toro, released in 2016, is the clearest example of ELK's walking wilds: a bull wild crosses the reels and respins follow as it moves. Nitropolis (2020) and Cygnus (2019) both add rows during play, so the number of ways to win can climb dramatically. More recent titles listed by ELK include Propaganda 2, Wondertrain, Bamboo Pandits, Concrete Cowboys, Grizzly Stampede and Heist Guys 2.

ELK Studios RTP: what 94% versus 96% means in pounds

RTP is the share of all money staked that a game is designed to return over a very long run. The difference between 94% and 96% sounds small but is easy to put into pounds.

Published RTPExpected return on £100Theoretical cost
96.4% (Wild Toro)£96.40£3.60
96.1% (Nitropolis, Cygnus)£96.10£3.90
94% (Pirots, Pirots 2)£94.00£6.00

Over the long run, Pirots costs about two-thirds more per pound staked than Wild Toro. A single session can end anywhere, and some players accept a lower RTP for a game they enjoy, but it is worth knowing before you choose a stake. Casinos may also run other RTP versions, so the game's rules screen is the final word.

  1. Open the ELK game in your casino app.
  2. Tap the menu or question-mark icon.
  3. Open Game rules and look for the theoretical RTP line.
  4. Compare it with the table above.
  5. Set your stake with the long-run cost in mind.

X-iter and other ELK features you will not see in the UK

ELK's website promotes X-iter, a set of predefined modes that let players 'jump right into the action' by paying a higher price for a feature-rich spin or a direct route into the bonus. That is a form of bonus buy, and feature buys are not offered to players in Great Britain. If you watch videos of ELK games filmed elsewhere and see an X-iter menu, its absence in a UK app is normal.

Other UK rules apply as usual: at least 2.5 seconds per spin, no autoplay, turbo or slam-stop, balance and net position always visible, and a stake cap of £5 per spin at 25 or over and £2 at 18–24. Our UK slot design rules guide explains why.

Running ELK Studios games on iPhone and Android

ELK games are HTML5 and open in the casino app's game window. They tend to have rich animation and big grids, so a few phone settings make a difference:

  • Use Wi-Fi for the first launch, when the game's artwork downloads. Our casino app data usage guide explains why.
  • Keep some free storage, so the app can keep game files instead of downloading them again.
  • Close other apps if animation stutters on an older phone.
  • Rotate the phone on expanding grids such as Pirots for larger symbols.

Finding ELK Studios slots in a casino app

  1. Log in to your casino app.
  2. Tap Search and type a title, for example Pirots or Wild Toro.
  3. To see all ELK games, open the Providers filter in the lobby, if there is one, and choose ELK Studios.
  4. Confirm the ELK logo on the loading screen.
  5. Save favourites so they appear on your home screen.

Not every casino lists every ELK title, especially newer sequels. See finding games in a casino app for search tips.

Frequently asked questions

Is ELK Studios licensed in the UK?

Yes, ELK Studios is licensed in Great Britain through ELKAB Studios AB, which holds Gambling Commission account 40844. Its Malta company, ELK Studios Malta Ltd, holds a Malta Gaming Authority supply licence issued in February 2019. As a player you play ELK games through a UK-licensed casino, which holds your account and applies the UK rules. You can look up the account on the Commission's public register. Our how to check a casino licence guide explains how, and the UKGC entry covers what the regulator does.

What is the RTP of Pirots?

The published RTP of Pirots is 94%, and Pirots 2 is also published at 94%. That is lower than the roughly 96% many popular slots publish. Over a very long run, 94% means about £94 returned for every £100 staked, a theoretical cost of £6, compared with £4 on a 96% game. A single session can end very differently. Casinos may run other versions, so check the rules screen inside the game. Our Pirots guide and RTP range entry explain more.

What is X-iter in ELK slots?

X-iter is ELK Studios' set of predefined modes that let players pay more for a feature-rich spin or a direct route into the bonus. ELK's site describes it as a way to 'jump right into the action'. Because it works as a feature buy, it is not offered to players in Great Britain, so UK versions of ELK games leave it out. You reach bonus rounds only by landing them in normal play. Read our bonus buy entry for the rule and the reasons behind it.

How do walking wilds work in Wild Toro?

In Wild Toro, a walking wild moves one position across the reels on each respin, paying wins as it goes, until it walks off the grid. The bull character acts as a wild that crosses the screen, which is why the game is often used as the example of ELK's walking wilds. On a phone the moving wild is large and easy to follow, even in portrait. Wild Toro has a published RTP of 96.4% and a maximum win of 2,250 times the stake. See our Wild Toro guide and wild symbol entry.

Are ELK Studios slots good on small phones?

Most ELK slots work on small phones, but the busiest games, such as Pirots on an expanded 8×8 grid, can feel crowded. Symbols and bird paths get small, and the counters around the grid are compact. Turning the phone sideways, increasing display zoom, or using a tablet all help. Games with fewer rows, like Wild Toro, are easier on a compact screen. Performance also depends on your phone's age and free storage. Our guide to casino apps for small screen phones suggests settings for iPhone and Android.

How many ELK Studios slots are there?

Reference listings show more than 120 ELK Studios slots, and the studio keeps adding sequels to its main series. The exact number available to you depends on your casino, since each operator chooses which games to carry. Search the app's lobby by title or use a Providers filter if it has one. Well-known series include Wild Toro, now on its third game, and Pirots, which has reached Pirots 5 according to ELK's site. Our finding games in a casino app guide explains how to search effectively.

Why do ELK games take a while to load?

ELK games take longer to load the first time because they include detailed animation and sound that the app must download. Later launches are faster because the files are kept on your phone, as long as you have storage free. If a game repeatedly fails to load, check your connection, update the casino app, clear its cache and restart the phone. If other games work but one ELK title does not, contact the casino's support team. Our casino app games won't load guide covers each step.

Can I use a casino bonus on ELK Studios slots?

Usually you can use a matched bonus on eligible slots, but whether ELK games count depends on the casino's terms, not on the studio. Some casinos exclude certain games or count them at a lower rate towards wagering, which is capped at 10x in Great Britain since 19 January 2026. Free spins offers normally name specific games, which may not be ELK titles. Read the eligible games list in the offer terms before playing. Our game weighting and wagering requirements guides explain what to check.
