UK slot design rules on mobile control how fast and how intensely you can play: no autoplay, at least 2.5 seconds per spin, no turbo or slam-stop buttons, no celebrating a win smaller than your stake, and your balance and net position always on screen. This guide explains each rule, what it looks like in a casino app on your phone, and why the same slot can behave differently abroad.
Since 31 October 2021, online slots in Great Britain can’t offer autoplay, turbo, quick spin or slam stops, and each spin takes at least 2.5 seconds.
Wins smaller than your stake can’t be celebrated with sounds or animations, and your net position must be shown.
From 17 January 2025, similar rules cover other online casino games, with at least 5 seconds per round on non-slot games.
Bonus buy features aren’t offered in Great Britain, and demo play is only available after age verification.
Stake limits of £5 (25+) and £2 (18–24) per spin sit on top of these design rules.

UK slot design rules on mobile: the full list
The Gambling Commission sets technical standards that every online game offered to players in Great Britain must meet. The rules for slots tightened on 31 October 2021, with the aim of reducing the speed and intensity of play. They apply in exactly the same way whether you play in an app, in a mobile browser or on a laptop.

No autoplay, turbo or slam stop: the spin button explained
In many international versions of a slot, the bet panel includes an Auto button for setting 10, 50 or 100 automatic spins, a lightning-bolt icon for turbo, and the option to tap the screen to stop the reels instantly. In Great Britain, all three are removed. You will see a single spin button, sometimes with a settings cog beside it, and nothing that plays on your behalf.
Autoplay removed: each spin is a separate decision, which gives natural pauses.
Turbo spin removed: the reel animation can’t be shortened below the minimum cycle.
Slam stop removed: tapping the reels while they spin does nothing. On some games, a tap only skips a win animation after the result is shown.
If a slot in a UK app shows an autoplay button, you are probably not looking at a UK-licensed product, or the app is showing a non-UK version. Stop and check the operator’s licence; our guide on how to check a casino licence shows how.
The 2.5-second minimum spin and how it feels on a phone
A slot’s game cycle, from tapping spin to the result being shown, must last at least 2.5 seconds. On a phone, you notice this as a short lockout: the spin button dims or shows a spinning icon, and nothing happens if you tap again. That isn’t lag on your connection; it’s the rule.
The minimum still allows a lot of play. At exactly 2.5 seconds a spin, that is up to 24 spins a minute and 1,440 an hour. At 20p a spin, that is up to £288 staked an hour. Most sessions are slower in practice because of features and win animations, but the arithmetic shows why session budgets and reality checks remain useful.
No celebrating losses disguised as wins
On a multi-line slot you can ‘win’ on a spin while losing money overall. If you stake £1 and land a combination paying 40p, the result is a 60p loss. Before 2021, many games played the same celebratory sounds and animations for that result as for a real win. UK rules now ban celebrating any return that is equal to or less than the stake.

On your phone, a sub-stake return usually appears as a simple ‘Win 40p’ figure in the bet bar, without lights or music. Watching your net position rather than the win field gives a truer picture of the session.
Finding your balance and net position on screen
UK slots must show your balance and your net position, the running total of what you have won or lost since you started. Mobile layouts vary, so the information can be easy to miss on a small screen.
Open the slot and look at the very top or bottom edge of the game; many UK casinos add a thin session bar there.
Find the net position figure, often labelled Session, Net or Profit/Loss, shown with a plus or minus sign.
Look for the session timer next to it, showing how long you have been playing.
If you can’t see them in portrait, rotate to landscape or open the game menu; some games move the bar into the menu on narrow screens.
Check the figures every few minutes, and stop when the net position reaches the loss you set before you started.
No bonus buys and age-verified demo play
Many modern slots, such as Gates of Olympus, are sold to other markets with a bonus buy button that lets players pay a multiple of the stake to enter the free spins round directly. That option isn’t offered to players in Great Britain, so the UK version shows only the normal spin controls. Features still trigger in the usual way through scatters or other symbols.
Free-to-play demo versions are available only after you have registered and verified your age, a rule in place since May 2019. If an app asks you to verify before trying a demo, that is why; see demo mode needs verification for the details, and our page on free casino apps for what demo play does and doesn’t show.
How the rules extend to other casino games
From 17 January 2025, the Commission extended similar rules to other online casino games, such as RNG roulette, blackjack and other table games. They can’t offer autoplay or features that speed up play, they must not celebrate losses disguised as wins, and each round must last at least 5 seconds.

Why a slot looks different in a UK app
Game studios build a UK-compliant version of each slot, and casinos serve that version to customers in Great Britain. If you watch a video of a slot recorded elsewhere, you may see autoplay, turbo, a bonus buy button or higher stakes. None of those will appear in a UK app. The underlying maths of the base game is usually the same, though RTP can still vary between versions and casinos, so check the game’s help screen. Our guide on how casino app games work explains random number generators and RTP settings.

Licensed slot apps that follow the UK design rules
All slots in apps licensed by the Gambling Commission must follow these rules, including PlayOJO and Coral. PlayOJO gives new UK customers (excluding Northern Ireland) 80 free spins on Big Bass Bonanza at 10p each with a first deposit of at least £10, and winnings are paid in cash with no wagering. Coral gives 100 free spins at 10p each when you deposit and bet £10 on slots, with no wagering on winnings. Both are 18+ and full terms apply.
Both apps are licensed by the Gambling Commission, so their slots follow the UK design rules. PlayOJO’s 80 spins and Coral’s 100 spins are 10p each and need a qualifying deposit or bet. 18+, T&Cs apply.

Frequently asked questions
Why is there no autoplay on UK slot apps?
Autoplay has been banned on online slots in Great Britain since 31 October 2021. The Gambling Commission concluded that playing many spins without a decision between each one increased the intensity of play and the risk of harm. Every spin in a UK app must be started with its own tap. Since 17 January 2025, autoplay has also been banned on other online casino games, such as RNG roulette and blackjack. The autoplay glossary entry explains how the feature worked and why it was removed.
Why are slots so slow on my phone?
UK rules require each slot spin to take at least 2.5 seconds from start to result, and turbo or quick spin modes aren’t allowed. A brief pause where the spin button is greyed out is therefore normal and not a fault. If the reels freeze for much longer, that may be a connection problem; close and reopen the game, as the result is stored on the server. Our casino app troubleshooting guide covers genuine performance issues, including slow loading on older phones.
What is a loss disguised as a win?
It is a spin that returns less than you staked but is presented as a win. If you stake £1 and win 40p, you have lost 60p, yet older slots often played celebratory sounds and animations anyway. Since October 2021, UK rules ban celebrating any return equal to or below the stake, so the win is shown plainly in the bet bar. Following your net position, rather than the win figure, gives an accurate view of a session. Our net position entry explains where that figure appears.
Can I buy bonus features on UK slot apps?
No. Bonus buy, sometimes called feature buy, isn’t offered to players in Great Britain. In other markets, it lets you pay a multiple of your stake to enter a slot’s bonus round directly. In UK apps, free spins and other features can only be triggered during normal play. If you see a bonus buy button, the version you are looking at isn’t intended for UK players. Our bonus buy glossary entry explains how the feature works and why regulators see it as high-risk.
Do the slot design rules apply to live casino?
Live dealer games aren’t spun by software, so the 2.5-second slot rule doesn’t apply to them. Their pace is set by the dealer and the betting timer for each round. However, the rules introduced on 17 January 2025 apply to other online casino games, such as RNG roulette and blackjack, requiring at least 5 seconds per round and banning autoplay and features that speed up play. Our guide on how to play live casino on mobile explains how betting windows work.
Why can’t I play a slot demo without signing up?
Since May 2019, licensed operators in Great Britain have only been allowed to offer free-to-play demo games after verifying a customer’s age. That means you need to register and complete age verification before trying a demo in a UK casino app. The rule is intended to stop under-18s accessing gambling-style games. Demo play uses the same game and RTP but no real money. Our help page on demo mode needing verification explains the process and what to expect.
Can I stop the reels early by tapping the screen?
No. Slam stops, which let players end the reel animation early, have been banned on UK slots since October 2021, as they speed up play and can give a false sense of control over the result. The outcome of a spin is decided by the random number generator as soon as you tap spin, so stopping the reels would never have changed it. In some games, tapping only skips a win animation once the result is shown. Our guide on how casino app games work explains random outcomes.
Do UK slot rules differ between iPhone and Android?
No. The rules are set by the Gambling Commission and applied in the game itself, so every licensed casino app shows the same UK-compliant version on iPhone, Android, tablets and computers. What can vary is layout: where the net position bar sits, or how the bet menu looks in portrait and landscape. The rules also apply in mobile browsers. Our guide to portrait vs landscape mobile slots explains how layouts change when you rotate your phone.
