If your casino app demo mode needs verification, the app is following UK rules: since May 2019, every Gambling Commission-licensed casino has had to check who you are and that you are over 18 before letting you open any game, free demo versions included. Once your account is verified, demo play usually unlocks straight away, with no deposit needed at most casinos.
UK-licensed casinos must verify your age before free-to-play demos, a rule in force since May 2019.
Verification is normally automatic at sign-up; documents are only needed if the checks can’t match you.
A deposit isn’t usually required to play demos once verified, but some casinos don’t offer demo play at all.
Demo results don’t predict real-money play: the house edge applies the moment you stake real money.

Why casino app demo mode needs verification
Tapping Demo or Play for fun on a slot and being asked to sign in, or to upload ID, surprises a lot of people. It feels like a free game should be free of paperwork. In Great Britain it isn’t, because the Gambling Commission treats free-to-play casino games as something that must be kept away from under-18s. A demo looks and plays exactly like the real game, so the age gate applies to both.
So the message doesn’t mean anything is wrong with your account. It means the casino hasn’t yet confirmed who you are, or that you aren’t signed in. Once verification is complete, the demo button normally works for the whole lobby. The demo mode glossary entry explains the term itself.
The May 2019 rule: age checks before free play
Before 2019, many UK casinos let anyone open a demo game without an account, and verification could happen after a deposit. The Gambling Commission changed that in May 2019. Licensed operators now have to verify a customer’s name, address and date of birth before that customer can deposit, gamble or play free-to-play versions of gambling games. The same changes stopped casinos asking for ID only when you tried to withdraw, which used to be a common complaint.
The rule is part of a wider set of protections. Slot demos in Great Britain also follow the same design rules as real-money games: no autoplay, a minimum of 2.5 seconds per spin and no feature buys. The UK casino app rules guide brings them all together.

Social casino apps on the App Store and Google Play use virtual coins you can buy but never cash out. They aren’t licensed gambling, so they don’t carry the same checks or protections, and the games can behave differently from the versions in a licensed casino app. Our page on free casino apps compares the options in more depth.
How to verify your account so demo mode unlocks
Install the official app from your phone’s store, confirming the listed developer is the licensed operator.
Tap Join or Register and enter your legal name, date of birth, home address, email and mobile number exactly as they appear on official records.
Submit the form. The casino runs electronic checks against credit reference and electoral roll data, usually within seconds.
If the checks pass, you are verified: open any slot and tap Demo or Play for fun.
If the app asks for documents, upload a clear photo of your passport or driving licence and, if requested, a recent bill or bank statement.
Wait for confirmation by email or in-app message, then reopen the game.
Documents are needed only when the automatic checks can’t confirm you, for example after a recent move or if you aren’t on the electoral roll. Our casino app verification guide covers good document photos, and how casino apps check your age explains the electronic checks.
Do you have to deposit to play demo games?
Usually not. Verification, not a deposit, is what the rules require. Once your identity is confirmed, most casinos open demo play to signed-in customers whether or not they have funded the account. A few casinos choose not to offer demo play at all, or show it only on some games, so if there is no Demo button on any slot, it is the casino’s choice rather than a verification issue.
Free spins from a welcome offer aren’t demo play. They are real-money spins and appear only after the qualifying deposit or play set out in the offer terms, with any winnings paid as cash or bonus money according to those terms.

Demo games run the same way on both platforms because they are the same HTML5 games loaded inside the app. Most slots work in portrait, with some switching to landscape for a wider reel set; rotation lock in Control Centre on iPhone or the quick settings panel on Android can stop the game turning when you don’t want it to. Demo play uses the same data as real play, mostly when the game first loads, so a few games on mobile data is rarely an issue. Our guide to portrait vs landscape mobile slots explains layout differences.
Getting the most from a demo once it unlocks
Open the paytable and rules first; they show how features trigger and what each symbol pays.
Check the RTP shown in the game’s help screen, which can differ between casinos running different versions; see how to find a slot’s RTP in an app.
Use the demo to learn the buttons and bet settings, not to predict results: a lucky demo session says nothing about the next one.
Notice how quickly virtual credits go up and down; real money moves the same way, and the house edge applies to every stake.
Some people only want to look at a game before deciding whether to open an account. Without verifying, you can still read about a slot’s features, layout and published RTP on its developer’s website or on our slot pages, such as Big Bass Bonanza. What you shouldn’t do is look for an unlicensed site that skips age checks: those sites have no UK protections, and the games may not be the genuine versions.

Frequently asked questions
Why does a casino app ask for verification to play free games?
Because UK law requires it. Since May 2019, Gambling Commission-licensed casinos must verify a customer’s name, address and date of birth before they can play free-to-play versions of gambling games, not just before they deposit. The aim is to stop under-18s playing casino games, which look and behave the same in demo mode as with real money. Most people are verified automatically at sign-up within seconds. The rule set is explained further in are casino apps legal in the UK.
Can I play casino demo games without an account in the UK?
Not at a UK-licensed casino. Demo versions of slots and table games are only available after you have registered and passed age verification. Some developers show short previews or videos on their own websites, and social casino apps offer games with virtual coins, but those aren’t the same thing as a licensed casino’s demo. Avoid unlicensed sites that skip checks, as they offer no UK protections. Our page on free casino apps explains the alternatives and their limits.
Do I need to deposit money to unlock demo mode?
Usually not. The rules require verification before free play, not a deposit. Once your identity checks have passed, most casinos let signed-in customers open demo versions without funding the account. Some casinos don’t offer demo play at all, or only on certain games, which can look like a lock but is just a business choice. If demo still won’t open after verifying, ask support whether the casino offers it. First-deposit steps, for when you are ready, are in first deposit in a casino app.
How long does casino app verification take?
Most verification is automatic and takes a few seconds after you submit the registration form, because the casino checks your details against credit reference and electoral roll data. If those checks can’t match you, the app asks for documents, and a manual review of a clear photo can take from minutes to a day or two depending on the operator and time of day. Entering your details exactly as they appear on official records avoids most delays. The casino app verification guide has tips on document photos.
Are demo slots the same as the real-money versions?
The game itself is the same: the same symbols, features and design rules. The maths can differ in one respect, because many slots come in several RTP versions and a casino may run a version different from the one the developer advertises. The game’s help screen shows the figure that applies. Demo play also uses virtual credits, so wins and losses mean nothing financially. Results in demo mode don’t predict real play. The RTP glossary entry explains what the percentage does and doesn’t tell you.
Can I use bonus buy in demo mode in the UK?
No. Feature buy, also called bonus buy, isn’t offered to players in Great Britain, and that applies to demo versions in UK casino apps as well as real-money play. The option you may see in videos or on overseas sites is removed from the GB build of the game, so the bonus round can only be triggered in the normal way, by landing the right symbols. This is one of several UK design rules alongside no autoplay and minimum spin times. See bonus buy for the background.
Why can’t I find a demo button in my casino app?
Either you aren’t signed in and verified, or the casino doesn’t offer demo play on that game or at all. Check you are logged in and that no verification request is waiting in your inbox or account messages. If you are verified and still see only real-money options on every game, the casino has chosen not to provide demos, which it is allowed to do. Some studios also restrict demos. Ask support if you are unsure. Finding games in a casino app explains lobby layouts.
Is it safe to send ID to a casino app to play demos?
Sending ID to a UKGC-licensed casino through its official app is generally safe, as licensed operators must protect personal data under UK law and use secure uploads. The key is making sure the app is genuine: download it from the App Store or Google Play, check the developer name matches the licence holder and confirm the licence on the Gambling Commission’s register. Never send documents by social media or to an unofficial email address. Our guide on how to spot fake casino apps shows what to check.
Do free-to-play prize games in casino apps need verification too?
Yes. Free-to-play games with real prizes, such as daily wheels or prize games that some casinos offer, are only available to verified customers aged 18 or over. Coral’s App Store description refers to prize-paying games you don’t stake on, while the Ladbrokes description names Instant Spins and a daily prize wheel among its no-stake games. Any prizes are subject to the casino’s terms. These games are separate from slot demos, which use virtual credits. Daily promotions are covered in daily free spins apps.
