Are casino apps legal in the UK?

Are casino apps legal in the UK? Yes, for adults aged 18 or over, as long as the app belongs to an operator licensed by the Gambling Commission to serve players in Great Britain. You don’t break any law by playing on one. The legal duties sit with the operator, which must verify you, offer safer gambling tools and follow the stake and bonus limits.

Key takeaways

  • Real-money casino apps are legal for over-18s in Great Britain when the operator holds a Gambling Commission licence.
  • Offering casino games to people in Great Britain without that licence is illegal for the operator.
  • Licensed apps must apply UK rules: age checks, £5/£2 slot stake limits, 10x bonus wagering cap and no credit cards.
  • You can confirm any app is legal in two minutes on the Commission’s public register.

Are casino apps legal in the UK? Yes, with a licence

Online casino gambling is legal in Great Britain under the Gambling Act 2005. Since November 2014, any company offering gambling to people in Great Britain must hold a licence from the Gambling Commission, wherever the company itself is based. That rule covers apps just as it covers websites: an app is simply another way into a licensed account.

For you as a player, the legal position is simple. If you’re 18 or over and use a licensed casino app, you’re doing something lawful. It’s the operator that carries the obligations, and the operator that breaks the law if it serves people in Great Britain without a remote gambling licence.

Northern Ireland is part of the UK but has separate gambling law, so the picture there is a little different; we cover it further down.

What the law requires of a licensed casino app

A licence comes with a long list of conditions. These are the ones you’ll notice inside an app.

RuleWhat it means on your phone
Age and identity checks before playYou confirm name, address and date of birth before depositing or playing demos
Slot stake limitsMaximum £5 a spin if you’re 25 or over, £2 if you’re 18–24
Slot design rulesNo autoplay or turbo, at least 2.5 seconds a spin, balance and net position shown
Non-slot game pacingAt least 5 seconds a round on other online casino games, no autoplay
Bonus wagering capped at 10xNo welcome offer can ask you to wager more than ten times the bonus
No credit cardsDebit cards, e-wallets and bank payments only; credit-funded wallets are blocked too
No reverse withdrawalsOnce you request a payout, you can’t cancel it to keep playing
Safer gambling toolsDeposit limits, time-outs, reality checks and self-exclusion in the account menu
Independent dispute resolutionAn approved ADR body named in the complaints policy

Operators must also tell you how well your balance is protected if the company goes bust, using a rating of not protected, medium or high protection. You’ll usually find it in the terms or at sign-up. The full list of recent changes is in our UK casino app rules guide.

  1. Open the casino’s website or the app’s terms and find the operator’s company name and Gambling Commission account number, usually in the footer.
  2. Search the Gambling Commission’s public register for that number or company name.
  3. Check the licence status is active and that the brand appears among the trading names.
  4. Open the App Store or Google Play listing and compare the developer or seller with the licence holder.
  5. If anything doesn’t match, don’t deposit.

Here’s how that looks for the operators we cover, taken from the register and the store listings.

BrandLicence holderUKGC accountStore developer or seller

CasumoRecro Limited61549Casumo Services Limited / Casumo
10betBlue Star Planet Limited43173Blue Star Planet Ltd (Google Play); 10bet Limited (App Store)

Big groups often publish apps under a sister company, as Entain does for Coral and Ladbrokes, so a name that differs but clearly belongs to the same group is normal. Our safe casino apps page has more examples.

Why legal casino apps are on the App Store and Google Play

Both app stores add their own layer. Apple only accepts real-money gambling apps in the UK from licensed operators, submitted by the company itself. Google Play allows them in Great Britain only from licensed operators it has approved, and requires an adult rating, location blocking and a free download. Both stores rate these apps 18+ or PEGI 18.

That doesn’t make every app in the store safe, and a missing app isn’t proof of anything shady, as our page on casino apps not on Google Play explains. But an app downloaded from the official store, with a developer that matches the licence, is the strongest sign you’re in the right place.

Unlicensed casino apps: illegal for the operator, risky for you

Sites and apps that take British players without a licence are acting illegally. The Gambling Commission works with payment firms, app stores and internet companies to disrupt them. You wouldn’t be prosecuted for using one, but you’d give up every protection listed above: no stake limits, no capped wagering, no obligation to pay out fairly and no independent complaints route.

Unlicensed sites often lean on crypto deposits, bonus offers with huge wagering and promises to accept people who have self-excluded. That last one is a serious warning sign. If you’re registered with GAMSTOP, a site offering to let you play is telling you it ignores UK rules. The crypto casino apps page explains why licensed UK casinos don’t take cryptocurrency.

The age limit: why 18 means 18

Casino gambling is 18+ in the UK, with no exceptions for lower-stakes games. Licensed apps must check your age before you can deposit, play or even open a demo game, and they’ll ask for documents if electronic checks can’t confirm it. An operator that lets a child gamble faces serious regulatory action. Our guide on how casino apps check your age explains the checks step by step, and parents can use Screen Time on iPhone or Family Link on Android to block 18-rated apps.

Are casino apps legal in Northern Ireland?

The Gambling Act 2005 and the Gambling Commission cover Great Britain: England, Scotland and Wales. Northern Ireland has its own, much older gambling legislation, which was written before online casinos existed. In practice many GB-licensed operators accept players there, but some exclude Northern Ireland from parts of their service or from offers. PlayOJO’s welcome offer, for example, isn’t available to Northern Ireland customers. Our Northern Ireland casino apps page explains what that means for players.

How UK casino app law has changed since 2019

DateChange
May 2019Age and identity checks required before deposits or demo play
14 April 2020Credit cards banned for gambling, including through e-wallets
31 October 2021Slot design rules: no autoplay or turbo, 2.5-second spins, reverse withdrawals banned
17 January 2025Autoplay and speed rules extended to other casino games, with at least 5 seconds a round
9 April 2025£5 maximum slot stake for players aged 25 and over
21 May 2025£2 maximum slot stake for players aged 18–24
19 January 2026Bonus wagering capped at 10x; mixed-product promotions banned
1 April 2026Remote Gaming Duty paid by operators rose from 21% to 40%

None of these changes made casino apps any less legal; they tightened what licensed operators may do. The tax change falls on operators, not players, as our page on whether casino app winnings are taxed explains.

Your rights if something goes wrong in a legal app

Playing in a licensed app gives you a clear route if a withdrawal is refused or a game result is disputed. Complain to the casino first through its formal process. If it hasn’t resolved things within eight weeks, or you disagree with its final answer, you can take the complaint to the operator’s ADR provider at no cost. The Gambling Commission doesn’t settle individual disputes, but it does want to hear about operators breaking the rules.

Frequently asked questions

Is it illegal to gamble on a casino app in the UK?

No, not for adults using licensed apps. Online casino gambling is legal in Great Britain under the Gambling Act 2005, provided the operator holds a Gambling Commission licence. Players aged 18 or over don’t commit any offence by playing. The legal duties fall on the operator, which must verify your age, provide safer gambling tools and follow the stake and bonus limits. If you want to confirm an app is licensed, our safe casino apps guide shows how to check the public register.

How old do you have to be to use a casino app in the UK?

You must be 18 or over. Licensed casino apps verify your name, address and date of birth before you can deposit or play, including free demo games, and they may ask for ID documents if the electronic check doesn’t confirm your age. App stores rate these apps 18+ or PEGI 18 as well. An operator that lets an under-18 gamble faces regulatory action and must close the account. Our page on how casino apps check your age explains the process in detail.

Are offshore casino apps legal in the UK?

Offering gambling to people in Great Britain without a Gambling Commission licence is illegal, so an offshore app that takes British players without one is breaking the law. You wouldn’t usually be prosecuted for using it, but you’d lose UK protections: stake limits, capped wagering, safer gambling tools and an independent complaints service. Many operators based overseas, including in Gibraltar and Malta, do hold UK licences, so location alone isn’t the issue. The UKGC glossary entry explains what the licence covers.

Do casino apps need a licence to be on the App Store?

Yes. Apple only allows real-money gambling apps on the UK App Store from licensed operators, and the app has to be submitted by the company itself. Google Play allows them in Great Britain only from licensed operators that Google has approved through its own application process. Both stores rate them for adults. A store listing is a good sign, but still check that the developer name matches the licence holder. Our guide to downloading casino apps shows what to look for.

Is there a maximum bet on UK casino apps?

On online slots, yes. Since 9 April 2025, players aged 25 and over can stake up to £5 a spin, and since 21 May 2025, players aged 18 to 24 are limited to £2 a spin. Table games and live casino don’t have the same legal cap, though each table sets its own limits. Bonus terms often add a lower maximum bet while a bonus is active, such as Casumo’s £5. Full detail is on our casino app maximum stake page.

Can I use a credit card on a UK casino app?

No. Credit cards have been banned for gambling in Great Britain since 14 April 2020, and the ban also covers e-wallets, Apple Pay and Google Pay when they’re funded by a credit card. Licensed apps accept debit cards, bank payments and e-wallets funded from a bank account or debit card instead. If a deposit is declined, a credit card hidden behind a wallet is a common reason. Our debit card casino apps guide covers the accepted options.

Can you legally use casino apps in Scotland and Wales?

Yes. Scotland and Wales are part of Great Britain, so the same Gambling Act 2005 and Gambling Commission licensing apply as in England. Licensed apps are legal for anyone aged 18 or over, with identical stake limits, wagering caps and safer gambling tools. Northern Ireland is the part of the UK with different gambling law, which is why some offers exclude it. Our Northern Ireland casino apps page explains how that affects players there.

Is it legal to use a casino app on a work phone?

Gambling on a work phone isn’t against gambling law, but it’s very likely to break your employer’s IT policy. Company phones are often monitored, may route traffic through a corporate VPN that confuses location checks, and can block 18-rated apps entirely. Using a work device to gamble could lead to disciplinary action even though the casino itself is legal. Keep gambling on your own device. The practical problems are covered in casino apps on a work phone.

Did the 2026 rule changes make casino apps illegal?

No. The changes tightened what licensed operators may offer rather than banning anything for players. From 19 January 2026 bonus wagering is capped at 10x and promotions mixing casino and sports betting are banned, and from 1 April 2026 operators pay a higher Remote Gaming Duty of 40%. Casino apps from licensed operators remain fully legal for over-18s. Our 10x wagering casino apps page explains what the cap means for welcome offers.
