Casino app deposit declined

A casino app deposit declined message usually comes from one of three places: your bank (a gambling block, a fraud check or a credit card), the casino (a limit, an unverified account or a payment rule), or the payment method itself. Read who declined it, because the fix is different for each, and if it's a limit or block you set, it's working as intended.

Key takeaways

  • Credit cards can't be used to gamble in Great Britain, including through Apple Pay, Google Pay or a credit-funded PayPal.
  • Bank gambling blocks and deposit limits you've set will decline payments by design.
  • Coral and Ladbrokes cap each deposit at £2,000 and allow three active payment methods per rolling 30 days.
  • Banks often need you to approve a payment in their app; switching apps on your phone can time it out.
  • Don't keep retrying with different cards: it can trigger fraud checks at your bank and the casino.

Casino app deposit declined: first, who said no?

Every deposit passes through several hands: the casino's cashier, a payment processor, the card scheme or wallet, and your bank. Any of them can stop it. The message in the app often hints at which one: a reference to limits or verification points to the casino; "declined by your bank" or "do not honour" points to your card issuer; and a failure inside Apple Pay or PayPal points to that wallet.

Credit cards are banned for UK gambling

Since 14 April 2020, casinos licensed in Great Britain haven't been allowed to accept credit cards. The ban also covers e-wallets and phone wallets funded by a credit card. So if the card behind your Apple Pay, Google Pay or PayPal is a credit card, the deposit will fail. Some people only realise this when Apple Pay's default card is a credit card; change the default in Wallet, or pick your debit card on the payment sheet.

Our pages on Apple Pay casino apps, Google Pay casino apps and debit card casino apps explain which cards work with each method.

Bank gambling blocks and fraud checks

Many UK banks and card providers let you switch on a gambling block in their app, which declines any payment to a gambling merchant. Some make the block hard to remove quickly, with a cooling-off period before it lifts. If you turned one on, a declined deposit is the block doing its job. The bank gambling blocks guide explains how they work and why the delay exists.

Banks also run their own fraud checks. A first payment to a new merchant, a larger amount than usual, or several attempts close together can lead to a decline or a request to confirm in the banking app. Answering that request usually clears it. If your bank has frozen the card, contact the bank, not the casino.

If you're declined because of a block or limit you set, it's a good idea to leave it in place. Those tools exist for moments when you might want to spend more than you planned. The National Gambling Helpline (0808 8020 133) is free and open 24 hours a day if you want to talk it through.

Reasons the casino itself declines a deposit

  • Deposit limit reached. Limits you set apply across the app and website. Raising a limit normally involves a waiting period, while lowering it is immediate. See deposit limit increases.
  • Account not verified. UK casinos can't let you deposit until identity checks are complete. Our page on a casino app asking for documents explains what to send.
  • Affordability or source of funds review. Deposits may be paused while the casino checks spending is sustainable.
  • Per-deposit maximum. The Coral and Ladbrokes help pages set a £2,000 cap per deposit in the UK.
  • Too many payment methods. Coral and Ladbrokes limit UK customers to three active payment methods in a rolling 30-day period.
  • Below the minimum. Casumo's minimum is £10 for every method; at Coral and Ladbrokes the minimum is shown in the cashier, with £5 published for Google Pay and Pay by Bank.
  • Name mismatch. The card or account must be in the same name as your casino account.
  • Method not offered for deposits. Coral and Ladbrokes, for example, accept paysafecard only through a paysafecard account, not vouchers.

The phone-specific problem: approvals that time out

Card payments in the UK usually need strong customer authentication, which often means approving the payment in your banking app. On a phone, that means leaving the casino app, opening the bank app, approving, and switching back. If you take too long, or your phone closes the casino app in the background to save memory, the payment can fail even though you approved it.

  1. Start the deposit in the casino app and enter the amount.
  2. When the bank notification appears, tap it straight away rather than opening the bank app from the home screen.
  3. Approve the payment with Face ID, fingerprint or your banking PIN.
  4. Return to the casino app using the back link at the top left on iPhone, or the recent apps button on Android.
  5. Wait for confirmation before trying again. Check your balance and transaction history first.
  6. If the money left your bank but didn't reach your balance, contact the casino with the time and amount rather than depositing again.

iPhone vs Android: wallet-specific declines

On iPhone, check which card is your Apple Pay default in Wallet, and that the card hasn't expired or been replaced by your bank. On Android, check Google Wallet in the same way, and remember that Google Pay at Coral and Ladbrokes has a £5 minimum according to their help pages. On both platforms, if your bank issued a new card number, the old one may still sit in the wallet and in the casino's saved methods until you remove it. Our page on changing payment method in a casino app shows how.

Why you shouldn't keep trying different cards

Several failed attempts in a short time look like card testing, a common fraud pattern. Your bank may block the card, and the casino may suspend deposits while it investigates. Using someone else's card, even with permission, breaks casino terms and the closed-loop payment rules. If a deposit fails twice, stop, find out why, and fix the cause.

It's also worth pausing to ask whether you want to deposit right now. A declined payment is a natural break. Our guide on setting a gambling budget on your phone has ideas for keeping spending to what you planned.

Deposits that go through but don't qualify for an offer

A related problem is a deposit that works but doesn't trigger a welcome offer. Coral's terms exclude Neteller, PayPal, Paysafe, Skrill, prepaid cards and certain debit cards; Ladbrokes excludes prepaid cards, PayPal, Paysafe, Neteller, Skrill and Moneybookers. The payment method exclusions page lists them, and the page on free spins not showing covers what to do if a bonus is missing.

Apps with published deposit rules

Coral and Ladbrokes publish their caps and method limits; Casumo states a £10 minimum for all methods. Coral offers 100 free spins when you bet £10 on slots (10p each, valid 7 days, no wagering on winnings); Ladbrokes gives up to 500 free spins over 10 days after £10 on slots; Casumo gives a 50% bonus up to £100 on a £20+ first deposit, with 10x wagering within 7 days. 18+, new customers, terms apply.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my casino app deposit being declined?

The most common reasons are using a credit card (banned for UK gambling since April 2020), a gambling block on your bank card, a deposit limit you've reached, unfinished identity checks, a bank fraud check, or a name that doesn't match your casino account. Look at the wording of the message to see whether the casino or your bank declined it. Bank declines need sorting with the bank; casino declines usually need verification or a different eligible method. Our guide to making a first deposit explains the checks.

Can I use a credit card in a UK casino app?

No. Casinos licensed in Great Britain have been banned from accepting credit cards since 14 April 2020. That includes using a credit card indirectly through Apple Pay, Google Pay or an e-wallet such as PayPal that's funded by a credit card. Debit cards, bank transfers and e-wallets funded from a bank account or debit card are the usual alternatives. If your phone wallet's default card is a credit card, switch to a debit card for gambling. Our debit card casino apps page explains which cards work.

Why does Apple Pay fail when I deposit in a casino app?

Usually because the card behind Apple Pay is a credit card, which can't be used for gambling in Great Britain, or because the card has expired, been replaced or has a gambling block. Open Wallet, check which card is your default, and pick a debit card on the payment sheet. Make sure the name matches your casino account. If it still fails, your bank may be declining gambling payments, so check its app. Our Apple Pay casino apps page covers which partner apps accept it.

My bank has a gambling block. Can I turn it off to deposit?

Most banks let you remove a gambling block, but many add a delay, often a couple of days, before it lifts. That delay is deliberate: it gives you time to reconsider a decision made in the moment. If you turned on the block because gambling was costing more than you wanted, think carefully before removing it, and consider talking to the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133. Our guide to bank gambling blocks explains how they work.

What's the maximum I can deposit in one go?

It depends on the casino and on any limits you've set. The Coral and Ladbrokes help pages state a UK cap of £2,000 per deposit. Your own deposit limits, set in the app's safer gambling settings, override that if they're lower, and casinos may apply further restrictions after affordability checks. Payment methods also have their own limits, set by your bank or wallet. If a large deposit is declined, check your limits first. The casino app limits guide shows where they are.

Why does the casino say I've used too many payment methods?

Some operators limit how many different payment methods you can use in a period, to reduce fraud and keep payments traceable. Coral and Ladbrokes, for example, allow UK customers three active payment methods in a rolling 30-day period. If you've added and removed cards or wallets recently, you may hit that limit. Stick with a method you've already used, or ask support which methods are active on your account. Our page on changing payment method explains how to tidy up saved methods.

Money left my bank but my casino balance didn't change. What now?

Don't deposit again. Check your transaction history in the app, then your bank app, to see whether the payment shows as pending or completed. Sometimes a deposit takes a few minutes to appear, or the bank holds funds briefly before releasing them if the casino didn't complete the payment. If it's still missing after an hour, contact the casino's support with the time, amount and payment method. Our casino app transaction history page shows where to find the record.

Do I need to verify my account before I can deposit?

Yes. Under UK rules, a casino must verify your name, address and date of birth before letting you deposit or play. Usually this happens automatically when you register. If the electronic check couldn't confirm you, the app will ask for documents and block deposits until they're approved. Upload them through the app's verification section, and the deposit option should unlock once they're accepted. Our casino app verification guide covers the process.
