A gamble feature is an optional step after a slot win that lets you risk the amount you just won on a quick double-or-nothing game, usually guessing a card’s colour or suit. Pick right and the win grows; pick wrong and it is gone. Choosing Collect keeps the win, and on a phone that is normally the larger of the two buttons.
The gamble feature risks a win you have already landed, not your balance, on a guess or ladder.
Card colour gambles are usually close to 50/50 for double; suit gambles about 25% for four times.
A fair gamble doesn’t change your expected return, but it sharply lowers the chance of keeping anything.
Many slots in UK apps don’t include it, and where it appears it is always optional.

How the gamble feature works
After a winning spin on a slot that has one, two buttons appear: Collect and Gamble. Collect adds the win to your balance and you carry on as normal. Gamble opens a mini-game that puts that win, and only that win, at stake.
The best-known version shows a face-down playing card. Guess red or black correctly and the win doubles; guess the suit correctly and it multiplies by four. Get it wrong and the win is lost. You can usually repeat the gamble on the new amount until you collect, lose, or hit a ceiling set in the rules.
The other common version is the ladder, familiar from UK fruit machine apps. A light flicks between a higher and a lower prize, and a tap stops it on one. Classic Novomatic games such as Book of Ra Deluxe are known for the card gamble in many markets, but whether a given app’s version includes it is set out in that game’s rules.

Multiply the amount by the chance in each row and you get £4 every time. That is what a fair gamble means: the average value stays the same, but the result becomes all or nothing. If a game’s gamble is slightly less than fair, the rules or RTP notes will say so, and the average value then falls each time you use it.
None of this alters the base game’s house edge, which still applies to every spin. The gamble only reshapes what happens to a win once you have it.
The gamble feature in UK casino apps
You are less likely to meet a gamble feature in a UK app than in older land-based machines or overseas sites. Many modern slots are built without one, and many versions supplied to UK casinos leave it out. Where it does appear, it is optional, it only ever uses the win just landed, and the game must still show your balance and net position on screen.
It also sits alongside the wider UK rules on pace and stakes: no autoplay, at least 2.5 seconds per spin, and a stake limit of £5 a spin, or £2 for players aged 18–24. The gamble step doesn’t take a new stake from your balance, which is why it isn’t counted as a spin.
Collecting or gambling a win on a phone
On a small screen the Gamble and Collect buttons often appear where the spin button usually sits, so a habitual tap can land on the wrong one. Slow down after a win until you know the layout.
After a win, look for the two buttons before tapping anything.
Tap Collect to bank the win; the balance updates straight away.
If you open Gamble by mistake, look for a Collect or Take Win button inside the mini-game, which normally keeps the win without guessing.
Check the game rules for any maximum gamble amount or limit on rounds.
If the slot has no Gamble button at all, the version in your app simply doesn’t include it.
Should you use the gamble feature?
There is no maths reason to gamble, and the main practical effect is to turn steady small wins into fewer, larger ones and many zeros. That raises a slot’s effective volatility, which can drain a budget faster than expected.
It is especially worth avoiding when you are behind and hoping to get back to even. That is chasing losses in a different form, and a run of wrong guesses can come quickly. Frequently asked questions
What is the gamble feature on a slot?
It is an optional mini-game offered after some slot wins that lets you risk that win to try to increase it. The usual form is a hidden playing card: guess the colour to double the win or the suit to multiply it by four, and lose it if you are wrong. Tapping Collect skips it and adds the win to your balance. Many slots in UK apps don’t have one at all. Our guide to mobile slot features covers other post-spin options.
Are the odds on a gamble feature 50/50?
On a card colour gamble they are usually set at or close to 50/50, and on a suit gamble at or close to 1 in 4. A fair gamble keeps the average value of your win the same while making the outcome all or nothing. Some games set the odds slightly below fair, which the rules should state. Either way, there is no pattern to spot: each card is drawn at random. The RNG entry explains how those results are produced.
Is the gamble feature allowed in UK casino apps?
It can appear, but you will often find it missing. Many modern slots are designed without it, and many versions supplied to UK casinos leave it out. Where it is present, it is optional, uses only the win you have just landed, and runs alongside the UK rules requiring your balance and net position to be on screen. If you can’t see a Gamble button, your version doesn’t include it. See UK slot design rules on mobile for the wider rules.
How do I turn off the gamble feature?
Most games don’t have an off switch; you simply tap Collect after each win. Some slots include a setting in the menu to skip the gamble screen or collect automatically, which is worth enabling if you never use it. On a phone the Gamble button can sit where your thumb usually goes, so take a moment after wins. If you tap into the mini-game by mistake, look for a Collect or Take Win button. Our guide to playing slots on your phone covers other controls.
Can the gamble feature help win back losses?
No, and using it that way is risky. A fair gamble doesn’t change the average value of a win; it just makes losing it all much more likely with each repeat. Trying to recover earlier losses with a few lucky guesses is a form of chasing losses, which tends to deepen them. If you find yourself doing it, stop and take a break. Our guide to signs a casino app is affecting you explains what to look out for and where to get support.
What is a ladder gamble on fruit machine slots?
A ladder gamble shows a column of prize values beside the reels. After a win, a light moves between a higher and a lower step, and tapping stops it on one; landing higher moves you up, landing lower drops you down or to nothing. It is common on games based on pub fruit machines and works on the same all-or-nothing principle as the card gamble. Our page on fruit machine apps explains the other features these games use.
