Geolocation and casino apps

Geolocation is the process of working out where a device is, using GPS, nearby Wi-Fi networks, mobile masts or the internet address it connects from. Casino apps can use it to check which country you’re in and to personalise what they show you, and your phone lets you decide whether an app gets your precise position, an approximate one or none at all.

Key takeaways

  • Geolocation can come from GPS, Wi-Fi, mobile masts or simply your IP address.
  • Your phone lets you give a casino app precise location, approximate location or no location access.
  • The store privacy labels show what each casino app says it does with location data.
  • Location errors usually come from VPNs, roaming or blocked permissions rather than the casino.

What geolocation means on a phone

Geolocation turns signals into a position on a map. Your phone has several ways to do it, and it blends them depending on what’s available.

SourceTypical accuracyNeeds location permission?
GPS and other satellite systemsA few metres outdoorsYes
Wi-Fi networks nearbyStreet or building levelYes
Mobile mastsHundreds of metres to a few kilometresYes, when an app requests it
IP addressUsually country or regionNo; any website or app sees it

The last row matters. Even with location services off, every app and website sees the internet address your phone connects from, which usually reveals your country. That is why a VPN, which changes your apparent address, can cause problems in casino apps.

Why casino apps use geolocation

Casinos licensed in Great Britain must know who their customers are and must not offer gambling where it’s unlawful. A location check, from your IP address at minimum, helps them spot logins from countries they don’t serve and detect accounts used from unexpected places, a common sign of fraud. Some apps also use approximate location for personalisation, such as showing content relevant to your region.

Unlike some US state markets, the UK doesn’t require casino apps to pin you to a precise spot before every bet, and none of the operator help pages we checked for the five casinos we cover says the app needs your location to let you play. If an app asks, you can refuse and see what happens; if it then can’t work, it will usually tell you why. Our help page asking do casino apps track your location goes into more detail.

What casino app privacy labels say about location

Both stores make developers declare their data use. The App Store shows a privacy label, and Google Play shows a data safety section. The listings we checked on 20 October 2026 describe location like this.

Casino appWhat the listing says about location
Coral Casino (iOS)Coarse location, linked to you
Ladbrokes Casino (iOS)Precise location, not linked to you
PlayOJO (iOS)Listing notes the app may use your location even when it isn’t open, which can reduce battery life
Casumo (Google Play)May share location data
10bet (Google Play)May collect location

These are the developers’ own declarations, and the two stores use different categories, so they aren’t directly comparable. Our guide to reading casino app store listings explains what each label means.

How to control location access for a casino app

  1. On iPhone, open Settings, Privacy & Security, Location Services, and choose the casino app.
  2. Pick Never, Ask Next Time Or When I Share, or While Using the App. Avoid Always unless the app explains why it needs it.
  3. Switch off Precise Location if you’re happy for the app to know only your rough area.
  4. On Android, open Settings, Location, App location permissions (or Settings, Apps, the app, Permissions, Location).
  5. Choose Allow only while using the app, Ask every time, or Don’t allow, and switch off Use precise location if offered.
  6. Reopen the casino app and check it still works as you expect.

Location running in the background uses battery. If a casino app is set to Always, changing it to While Using is a quick saving; our page on whether casino apps drain battery has more tips.

When geolocation causes a casino app error

A ‘not available in your location’ message usually has an ordinary cause: a VPN or iCloud Private Relay changing your apparent country, roaming abroad, a work or school network routing traffic elsewhere, or a mobile network whose internet address is registered outside the UK. Switch off any VPN, try Wi-Fi instead of mobile data or the other way round, and restart the app. If you’re in Northern Ireland, note that some offers exclude it. Step-by-step fixes are in casino app location error, and travel rules are in using UK casino apps abroad.

  • VPN: a service that changes the location your connection appears to come from.
  • App permissions: location is one of the permissions an app can request.
  • KYC: identity checks that confirm your name and address.
  • UKGC: the regulator for gambling in Great Britain.

Frequently asked questions

Do UK casino apps need my location?

Not usually in the precise, GPS sense. None of the operator help pages we checked for Coral, Ladbrokes, PlayOJO, Casumo or 10bet states that the app needs location services to let you play. Every app does see your IP address, which normally shows your country, and some store privacy labels declare location use for personalisation or other purposes. You can refuse the permission on iPhone or Android and change your mind later. Our guide to casino app location checks explains how operators check where you are.

What is the difference between precise and approximate location?

Precise location lets an app see your position to within a few metres using GPS and Wi-Fi. Approximate location, called coarse location by developers, gives only a rough area, typically a few kilometres across. iPhones have offered a Precise Location switch for each app since iOS 14, and Android has offered approximate location since Android 12. For a casino app, approximate is usually plenty if you allow location at all. Our app permissions entry covers the other access casino apps request.

Why does my casino app say I’m in the wrong country?

The app is most likely reading your IP address, which can point to the wrong country if you use a VPN, iCloud Private Relay, a work network or certain mobile networks. Roaming abroad can do it too, because your data may route through your home network or a foreign one. Switch off any VPN or relay service, change between Wi-Fi and mobile data, and restart the app. If the message persists inside the UK, contact the casino’s support. Our casino app location error page lists more fixes.

Can I use a UK casino app while on holiday abroad?

Sometimes, but it depends on the casino’s terms and the laws of the country you’re visiting. Some operators block access from particular countries, and gambling online is illegal in some places regardless of where the casino is licensed. Your account, balance and limits remain the same, and UK rules still govern a UK-licensed account. Check the casino’s terms before you travel and never use a VPN to get around a block. Our help page on using UK casino apps abroad explains the details.

Does a casino app track me when it’s closed?

Only if you’ve allowed background location. On iPhone that means the Always setting; on Android it’s Allow all the time. PlayOJO’s App Store listing carries Apple’s standard note that the app may use your location even when it isn’t open, so check what you’ve granted. Setting any casino app to While Using, or to Never, stops background tracking. Your phone also shows an arrow or indicator when location is in use. Our guide to casino app privacy settings walks through every relevant setting.

Are casino apps available in Northern Ireland?

Casino apps can be used in Northern Ireland, but some details differ from Great Britain because Northern Ireland has its own gambling law and isn’t covered by the Gambling Commission in the same way. Some promotions exclude it: PlayOJO’s welcome offer, for example, is for new UK customers excluding Northern Ireland. The account, apps and safer gambling tools otherwise look the same. Our page on casino apps in Northern Ireland sets out what changes.
