HTML5 games are casino games built with standard web technology, so a single version runs in a phone browser, a desktop browser and inside a casino app. Almost every slot and table game you open on a UK casino app today is an HTML5 game, which is why the same title looks and behaves the same whether you play in the Coral app or on PlayOJO’s mobile site.
HTML5 games are built once with web technology and run on any modern phone, tablet or computer.
They replaced Flash, which reached end of life on 31 December 2020.
In casino apps, HTML5 games load inside the app from the game provider’s servers, so a signal drop can stall them.
The result of each spin is decided by the game’s server-side random number generator, not by your phone.

What HTML5 games are
HTML5 is the current version of the language web pages are written in, and the term has come to mean the whole set of web tools around it: CSS for layout, JavaScript for logic, and the canvas and WebGL features that let a browser draw fast-moving graphics. An HTML5 game is a game made entirely from these parts. It needs no plug-in and no separate install; any modern browser engine can run it.
For casino studios that matters enormously. One build of a slot works on an iPhone, a Samsung tablet and a Windows laptop. Before HTML5, desktop casino games mostly used Adobe Flash, which phones never supported well. Studios rebuilt their catalogues in HTML5 through the 2010s, and Flash itself reached end of life on 31 December 2020.
How an HTML5 game loads in a casino app
When you tap a slot in a casino app, the app usually opens a web view, an embedded browser window, and asks the game provider’s server for that title. What follows takes a few seconds on a good connection.
The app confirms you are logged in and passes a session token to the game server.
The game’s code, artwork and sounds download, or load from the phone’s cache if you played recently.
The game checks your balance and stake options with the casino.
Each time you spin, your phone sends the stake to the server, the server’s random number generator decides the result, and the reels animate to show it.
Your updated balance appears in the game and in the casino’s account at the same time.
Because steps two to four depend on the network, a game can freeze mid-spin when your signal drops. The result has already been decided on the server, so reopening the game should show the outcome and the correct balance. Our help page on casino app games that won’t load covers what to try, and the RNG entry explains the server side.
Portrait, landscape and screen size
HTML5 lets a game detect your screen and rearrange itself. Many newer slots have a dedicated portrait layout, stacking the reels above a large spin button you can reach with a thumb, while older titles still ask you to turn the phone sideways. Table games often switch between a full-table view and a close-up of the betting area. On a foldable or tablet, the same game may show its desktop layout. The portrait vs landscape mobile slots guide shows what changes.

UK rules built into HTML5 casino games
Because the same HTML5 game serves many countries, studios build switches that the casino sets for each market. For players in Great Britain those switches enforce the Gambling Commission’s slot design rules: no autoplay, at least 2.5 seconds per slot spin, no turbo or slam-stop, no celebration of a win smaller than your stake, and a balance and net position always on screen. Since 17 January 2025 non-slot casino games must also take at least 5 seconds per round and can’t offer autoplay.
The same switches remove bonus buy features for British players and apply the online slot stake limits of £5 per spin for players aged 25 and over and £2 for those aged 18 to 24. If you see a bonus buy button or a turbo option in a game you reach through a UK app, something is wrong; report it to the casino.
RTP versions in HTML5 games
Most HTML5 slots come in several RTP versions, and the casino chooses which to run. The studio publishes the default or maximum figure, but the live number for the version in front of you sits in the game’s help or information screen, usually behind an ‘i’ or menu icon. A separate walkthrough on finding a slot’s RTP in an app shows where it hides in common game layouts. Whatever the figure, RTP is a long-run average: over time the house edge applies and losses are likely.
Data and battery use of HTML5 games
An HTML5 slot downloads its artwork and sound once, then mostly exchanges small messages with the server, so it uses less data than you might expect after the first load. Live dealer games are different: they stream video continuously and are far heavier. Graphics-rich slots work the phone’s processor hard, which drains the battery faster and can make the phone warm. Our pages on casino app data usage and battery drain give practical ways to cut both.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to download HTML5 casino games?
No. HTML5 games load on demand inside your casino app or browser, so there is nothing to install for each title. The first time you open a game, its graphics and sounds download in the background, which can take a few seconds and some data. They are then cached, so later visits are quicker. If storage runs low, clearing the app’s cache removes these files without touching your account or balance. Our app cache entry explains what is stored and when clearing it helps.
Are HTML5 casino games fair?
In a UK-licensed casino, yes, in the sense that results are random and the game pays back what its rules state over the long run. The outcome is decided by a random number generator on the game server, not by the animation on your phone, and games must be tested before a licensed casino can offer them. Fair doesn’t mean favourable: every game carries a house edge, so the casino expects to keep part of what is staked over time. Read more in are casino apps rigged.
What happens if my phone loses signal during a spin?
The spin result is decided on the server as soon as your stake is accepted, so losing signal doesn’t cancel it or change it. When you reconnect and reopen the game, it should complete the round and show the correct balance; many games display an ‘unfinished game’ message first. If the balance looks wrong after a few minutes, check your transaction or game history in the account menu before contacting support. Our guide to checking your play history shows where to find each round’s details.
Why do some slots only work in landscape?
Older HTML5 slots were designed for widescreen desktops and adapted for phones by simply shrinking that layout, which only fits when the phone is turned sideways. Newer releases are usually designed for portrait first, with the reels and buttons rearranged for one-handed play. If a game insists on landscape, unlock your phone’s rotation lock in Control Centre on iPhone or the quick settings panel on Android. Our guide to playing slots on your phone explains the controls in both orientations.
Can I play HTML5 casino games in demo mode?
Many HTML5 games have a play-money version, but in Great Britain you can only use it after the casino has verified your age, a rule in place since May 2019. That means registering and passing the age check first, even if you never deposit. Some casinos show demo buttons inside the lobby once you’re logged in; others don’t offer them at all. Demo play uses the same game but not always the same RTP version. Our page on demo mode verification explains the rules.
Do HTML5 games play differently in an app and a browser?
The game itself is the same: identical rules, features, stake range and RTP version for that casino. Differences come from the wrapper around it. The app may open games faster, keep you logged in with Face ID and remember recently played titles, while the browser may show its address bar and need more scrolling. Performance also depends on your phone’s browser engine. If a game stutters in one, try the other. Our comparison of a casino app or mobile site covers the differences in daily use.
Why do HTML5 games make my phone hot?
Busy slots with animated backgrounds, particle effects and 3D graphics push the phone’s processor and graphics chip hard, and that work produces heat and drains the battery. Live dealer video adds constant decoding on top. Lowering screen brightness, closing other apps, switching off the game’s background music and playing on Wi-Fi rather than mobile data all help. If the phone gets uncomfortably hot, stop and let it cool. Our page on whether casino apps drain battery lists more settings to try.
