A slot’s max win is the most a single spin, including any feature it triggers, can pay, usually written as a multiple of your stake such as 5,000x. At a 20p stake, 5,000x is £1,000. It is a ceiling, not a target: the top prize is designed to land extremely rarely.
Max win is a cap, written as a multiple of the stake, on what one spin and its features can pay.
Multiply by your stake: 5,000x at 20p is £1,000, at £2 it is £10,000.
When a feature reaches the cap, it usually ends straight away.
Bonus offers can have their own separate cap on winnings, set out in the terms.

What max win means on a slot
Every slot has a highest possible payout built into its maths, and most modern games also set a hard cap. The figure is published as a multiple of the total stake, because the same game can be played at 10p or at several pounds. If the cap is 5,000x and you stake 50p, the most that spin and anything it triggers can return is £2,500.
The cap covers the whole chain of events from one paid spin: the base game win, a free spins round it triggers, retriggers and multipliers. Once winnings during a feature reach the cap, most games stop the feature immediately and pay the maximum, even if spins remain.
Max win in pounds at UK stake limits
Since 2025, slot stakes in Great Britain are capped at £5 a spin for players aged 25 and over and £2 a spin for those aged 18 to 24. Those limits put a ceiling on what any multiplier can pay in pounds.
These are theoretical ceilings. The chance of reaching them is tiny, often a very small fraction of a per cent of feature rounds, and most players never come close. A larger headline max win usually goes with higher volatility, which means more sessions that return little.
Max win vs jackpots
Fixed max wins are different from progressive jackpots, which grow as players stake and pay out a pot rather than a multiple. Mega Moolah, for example, lists its top prize as a progressive jackpot rather than a multiplier. Some games combine both: a fixed max win on the reels plus a separate jackpot. Our jackpot slots apps page explains how those pots work on a phone.
Bonus max win caps in casino app offers
Casino offers can carry their own winnings cap, separate from the slot’s. 10bet’s welcome match is a real example: the bonus is 100% of the first deposit up to £25, wagered 10x on slots within 3 days, and winnings from the bonus are capped at £1,000. Anything above the cap is removed when the bonus completes. No wagering offers such as PlayOJO’s spins pay winnings as cash, but the slot’s own max win still applies.
Read the terms in the app’s promotions area before opting in; our guide to casino app bonus terms shows where caps usually appear.
How to check a slot’s max win in the app
Open the slot and tap the ‘i’, menu or paytable button.
Scroll the rules for a line beginning ‘Maximum win’ or ‘Max exposure’.
Note whether it is per spin or per feature, and whether the feature ends at the cap.
Multiply the figure by your stake to see the ceiling in pounds.
In portrait mode on a phone, the rules often open as a long scrolling page, so the max win line tends to sit near the bottom with the RTP. Our paytable guide shows the layout.
What happens after a large win in an app
Big wins are paid to your balance like any other, but withdrawing large sums can prompt extra checks. Operators may ask for identity documents or proof of where your money came from before releasing a payout; see large wins on casino apps and source of funds. UK players don’t pay tax on gambling winnings. Related terms: multiplier, RTP and jackpot.

Frequently asked questions
What does 5,000x max win mean?
It means the most one spin and any feature it triggers can pay is 5,000 times your total stake. At 10p that is £500, at £1 it is £5,000 and at the £5 limit for players aged 25 and over it is £25,000. If a free spins round reaches the cap part-way through, the game normally ends the feature and pays the maximum. The figure is a ceiling that very few spins ever approach, not a typical result. The table above converts several popular slots into pounds, and mobile slot features explained covers how caps interact with features.
How likely is it to hit a slot’s max win?
Extremely unlikely. Max wins are built to land on a tiny fraction of spins, and some studios that publish the odds quote figures in the millions to one. Most players will never see one, and a game with a huge headline cap usually pays less often in normal play because more of its return is held for rare events. Treat the max win as information about a game’s volatility, not as something to aim for. See volatility for how that affects a session.
Does the UK stake limit reduce the max win?
In pounds, yes. The multiplier stays the same, but because slot stakes are capped at £5 a spin for players aged 25 and over and £2 for players aged 18 to 24, the largest possible pound amount is lower than at higher stakes elsewhere. A 10,000x cap, for example, is worth up to £50,000 at £5 and £20,000 at £2. Progressive jackpots are separate and not limited by the multiplier. Our guide to UK stake limits on mobile slots explains the rules in full.
What is a max win cap on a casino bonus?
It is a limit, set in the offer’s terms, on how much you can win from a bonus before it converts to cash. 10bet’s welcome match, for example, caps bonus winnings at £1,000, and any amount above that is removed. Caps protect the operator from very large wins on bonus funds and are common on matched deposit offers. No wagering spins usually pay winnings as cash, though the slot’s own max win still applies. Check the promotion terms in the app, and see matched deposit for how match bonuses work.
Why did my free spins feature stop early?
The most likely reason is that your winnings in the feature reached the slot’s max win cap. Many modern games end a bonus round immediately once the cap is hit and pay out the maximum, even if spins remain. The rules screen confirms whether that applies to the game. If you didn’t reach the cap and the feature stopped, it may have been a connection drop; reopen the game, because the round normally resumes, and check your play history. See casino app games won’t load for connection fixes.
Is a higher max win slot better?
Not necessarily. A higher max win means the game can pay more in rare cases, but that potential is usually funded by fewer and smaller wins in normal play, so balances fall more often between features. The long-run cost depends on RTP, not on the max win. If you prefer steadier sessions, a lower cap and lower volatility may suit you better. Decide on a budget before you play and stick to it.
