Open banking explained

Open banking is the UK system that lets a regulated provider start a payment straight from your bank account, with your permission, so you can deposit into a casino app without a card. On a phone you are passed to your own banking app, approve the payment with Face ID or your fingerprint, and land back in the casino with the money in your balance.

Key takeaways

  • Open banking payments go directly from your bank account, approved inside your banking app.
  • Casinos usually call it Pay by Bank, Instant Banking or Trustly in the cashier.
  • Coral and Ladbrokes accept Pay by Bank from £5, and Casumo lists Trustly and Instant Banking.
  • Your card’s gambling block may not cover bank payments, so check with your bank.

What open banking means for casino payments

Open banking began in the UK in 2018, when the largest banks were required to let authorised third parties connect to customer accounts through secure, standardised links. Those third parties are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and can only act with your explicit consent, given inside your own bank’s app or website.

For casinos, the useful part is payment initiation: a provider sets up a payment from your account to the casino, you approve it with your bank, and the money moves by bank transfer. No card number is entered or stored. That makes it different from a debit card deposit, and different again from an e-wallet, which holds its own balance.

What open banking is called in casino apps

Operators rarely use the words open banking in the cashier. Look instead for one of the names below.

AppName in the cashierWhat the operator publishes
CoralPay by Bank (TrueLayer)£5 minimum deposit; listed as a withdrawal route
LadbrokesPay by Bank (TrueLayer)£5 minimum deposit; listed as a withdrawal route
CasumoTrustly, Instant BankingAccepted for deposits; £10 minimum deposit for all methods
10betTrustlyShown on third-party listings; check the cashier
PlayOJOCheck the cashierNot verified

Trustly and TrueLayer are payment providers rather than banks, and the money still comes from your own current account. Our Pay by Bank page explains the method in more depth, and bank transfer casino apps compares it with traditional transfers.

How an open banking deposit works on your phone

On mobile, open banking is usually an app-to-app hop. If your banking app is installed, the casino hands you over to it; if not, you log in through your bank’s web page instead.

  1. In the casino app, tap Deposit and choose Pay by Bank, Trustly or Instant Banking.
  2. Enter the amount, for example £20, and pick your bank from the list.
  3. Your banking app opens with the payment details pre-filled.
  4. Check the payee and amount, then approve with Face ID, fingerprint or your passcode.
  5. You are returned to the casino app, where the balance usually updates within moments.

An open banking example: deposit and payout

Say you deposit £20 with Pay by Bank at Ladbrokes, play, and later withdraw £45. Here is how the money typically moves.

  • The £20 leaves your current account as a bank payment and shows on your statement with the operator’s or provider’s name, not as a card transaction.
  • Under closed-loop payments, the £45 withdrawal is sent back to the same bank account.
  • The operator’s own approval comes first; Coral and Ladbrokes say timings run from instant to five banking days depending on the method, on top of internal processing.

Because the money returns to an account already proven to be yours, bank-based methods can make payouts straightforward. Even so, the first withdrawal may still trigger KYC checks.

Open banking, security and gambling blocks

Security is a strength: you approve every payment inside your bank’s own app, with its own login and biometrics, and the casino never sees your card. Each payment needs a fresh approval, so a provider can’t take money again without you.

There is one thing to know if you use your bank’s gambling block. Many banks let you block card payments to gambling merchants, and some extend that to bank transfers and open banking payments, but not all do. If you rely on a block to stay in control, ask your bank exactly what it covers. Our guide to bank gambling blocks and apps explains the options at Monzo, Starling and others, and GAMSTOP covers every UK-licensed gambling site and app.

Open banking can also be used, with your consent, to share account data rather than make a payment. Some operators may offer this as an alternative to uploading bank statements during source of funds or affordability checks. You choose which account to share, and the consent can be withdrawn.

Pros and cons of open banking in casino apps

Advantages

  • No card details shared with the casino
  • Approved in your own banking app with biometrics
  • Low minimum deposit at Coral and Ladbrokes (£5)
  • Withdrawals return to an account already linked to you

Drawbacks

  • Not every bank app hands off smoothly on every phone
  • Not offered by every casino
  • Some bank gambling blocks don’t cover it
  • Withdrawal times vary and aren’t always published

Frequently asked questions

What is open banking in online casinos?

Open banking lets a regulated provider start a payment straight from your bank account to the casino after you approve it in your banking app. In casino cashiers it appears as Pay by Bank, Instant Banking or Trustly. No card details are shared, deposits usually land within moments, and withdrawals can go back to the same account. Coral and Ladbrokes accept Pay by Bank from £5. See Pay by Bank for a full guide to the method.

Is open banking safe for gambling payments?

Yes, it is one of the more secure ways to pay. Providers are authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority, every payment is approved inside your own bank’s app with its usual security, and the casino never receives your card number. Each deposit needs a fresh approval. As with any method, only pay UK-licensed casinos and keep your banking app locked with biometrics. Our casino app security guide covers the wider basics.

Is Trustly the same as open banking?

Trustly is a payment provider that uses open banking connections in the UK to move money from your bank account to merchants. So choosing Trustly in a casino cashier is a form of open banking payment, though the brand name is Trustly rather than Pay by Bank. TrueLayer, which Coral and Ladbrokes use, does a similar job. In each case the money comes from your own current account. See our Trustly page for how it works in apps.

Will my bank’s gambling block stop open banking deposits?

Not always. Many banks’ gambling blocks focus on card payments to gambling merchants, and coverage of bank transfers and open banking payments varies from bank to bank. If you use a block to help you stay in control, ask your bank whether it covers these payments too. GAMSTOP and blocking software add further layers. Our guide to bank gambling blocks and apps compares the main options.

Can I withdraw to my bank with open banking?

Usually yes, back to the same account you deposited from. Coral’s and Ladbrokes’ help centres list Pay by Bank as a withdrawal route, and both also offer Fast Bank Transfer for withdrawals, which they say takes 2 to 4 business days once approved. Other apps may use a standard bank transfer for payouts. The cashier shows the options for your account. Our page on how long casino app withdrawals take compares methods.

Why did my banking app not open when I chose Pay by Bank?

The most common causes are an out-of-date banking app, a phone setting that stops links opening other apps, or choosing a bank that doesn’t match the app installed. You can still finish the payment through your bank’s web login if the browser opens instead. Updating the banking app and allowing it to open supported links usually fixes the hand-off. Our deposit declined help page covers other reasons payments fail.

Can a casino see my bank transactions through open banking?

Only if you separately agree to share account data, which is a different permission from making a payment. Some operators may offer data sharing as a quicker alternative to uploading statements during affordability or source of funds checks, and you choose which account to share. A Pay by Bank deposit on its own just moves the money. The affordability checks guide explains when checks happen and what is usually asked for.
