A progressive web app (PWA) is a website built to behave like an app: you add it to your home screen, it opens full-screen without the browser bar, and it can remember your login. For casino players it is a way to get an app-like shortcut to a casino’s mobile site without downloading anything from the App Store or Google Play.
A PWA is a website that can be added to your home screen and opens like an app.
It uses the same casino account, balance and limits as the full app and website.
PWAs take almost no storage, but they can’t use every phone feature a native app can.
Adding any casino site to your home screen gives a similar shortcut, even if it isn’t a full PWA.

What a progressive web app is
A progressive web app is an ordinary website with a few extra parts that let your phone treat it like an installed app. A small file called a web app manifest tells the browser the app’s name, icon and colours. A background script, known as a service worker, can cache parts of the site and handle notifications. Together they let the site open from its own icon, fill the screen and load quickly on a second visit.
‘Progressive’ refers to the way the site improves with the browser: on an older phone it behaves like a normal web page, while on a modern one it gains app-style features. Nothing is downloaded from a store, so there is no APK and no App Store listing to check.
Progressive web app vs native app vs browser tab
Casino players can reach the same account in three ways. The differences are mostly about convenience and phone features rather than games or offers, because the casino runs the same account and the same HTML5 games behind all three.

How to add a casino PWA to your home screen
You don’t need to know whether a casino has built a full PWA. The same steps create a home-screen icon either way; a true PWA simply opens without the browser’s address bar.
On iPhone or iPad (Safari)
Open the casino’s website in Safari and log in.
Tap the Share button, the square with an arrow pointing up.
Scroll down and tap Add to Home Screen.
Edit the name if you like, then tap Add.
Open the new icon from your home screen; if it’s a PWA it fills the screen with no Safari bar.
On Android (Chrome)
Open the casino’s site in Chrome.
Tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.
Choose Install app if it appears, or Add to home screen if it doesn’t.
Always up to date: there is no ‘update required’ screen.
Works on devices without Google Play, such as newer Huawei phones.
No store region problems when your account country is set wrongly.
Drawbacks
Phone features such as widgets, haptics and some biometric logins may be missing.
The browser can clear cached data, so you may need to log in again.
No store listing to confirm the developer, so check the web address carefully.
Notifications on iPhone only work once the site is added to the home screen and you allow them.
Where you meet PWAs in UK casino play
Most players meet the idea without the name. A casino’s help page may say ‘add us to your home screen’, or Chrome may show an Install banner on a casino’s mobile site. Behind it sits the same account you would use in the app: the same balance, the same deposit limits, the same verification and the same welcome offer terms. Licensing doesn’t change either; check the operator on the Gambling Commission register, as our casino licence guide explains.
UK game rules apply in a PWA exactly as in an app. Slots still need at least 2.5 seconds per spin, there is no autoplay, and the stake limits of £5 per spin for players aged 25 and over and £2 for 18 to 24-year-olds still apply. Safer gambling tools such as deposit limits and time-outs sit in the account menu.

Frequently asked questions
Is a progressive web app safe for gambling?
A progressive web app is as safe as the website behind it, because it is that website. It runs inside your browser’s security, needs no special permissions and installs no code outside the browser. The safety question is really about the operator: make sure the casino holds a UK Gambling Commission licence and that you typed the correct web address before adding it to your home screen. A lookalike address is the main trap. Our safe casino apps page lists the checks worth making before you deposit anywhere.
Do UK casinos offer progressive web apps?
Some casino mobile sites are built to PWA standards and offer an Install button in Chrome; others simply let you add a shortcut to the home screen. Operators don’t always say which they use, and the result looks similar either way. All five casinos we cover also have native apps on the App Store and Google Play, so a PWA is an option rather than a necessity. If you’re short on space or your phone lacks Google Play, the mobile casino UK page compares the website route with the store apps.
Can I use Face ID with a casino PWA?
Usually indirectly. A PWA can’t call Face ID the way a native app does for its own login screen, but Safari can fill your saved password after a Face ID check, and sites that support passkeys can sign you in with Face ID too. On Android the same applies with fingerprint unlock through Google Password Manager. Whether a passkey option exists depends on the casino, so look in its security settings. Our Face ID entry explains how the check works and what the casino actually receives.
Does a PWA use less data than a casino app?
A PWA uses less storage, but the data used while playing is broadly similar, because games and live streams load from the same servers whichever way you open the casino. The PWA may download a little more on first launch as it caches files, then less on later visits. Live dealer video is the biggest data user in any format. For realistic figures and ways to cut usage, see our page on casino app data usage, which covers Wi-Fi, 4G and 5G.
Will I get notifications from a casino PWA?
Only if you allow them. On Android, a PWA can ask for notification permission like an app. On iPhone, Apple added web push for home-screen web apps in iOS 16.4, so the site has to be added to your home screen first and must then ask you. Marketing messages also depend on your contact preferences in the casino account. If you’d rather not be nudged to play, decline the prompt or switch notifications off later in Settings. Our guide to casino app notifications explains which alerts are worth keeping.
Why does my casino PWA keep logging me out?
The most common cause is the browser clearing stored data, which removes the login token the site uses to remember you. On iPhone, Safari may remove website data for sites you haven’t opened recently, and clearing history wipes it at once. Private browsing mode never keeps it. Casinos also end sessions after a period of inactivity for security. Saving your password, or using a passkey if the casino offers one, makes signing back in quicker. Our session timeout entry explains why casinos log you out deliberately.
