APK: what it means for casino apps

An APK (Android Package Kit) is the file format Android uses to install an app, so every casino app on a Samsung, Pixel or Motorola phone arrives as one. In the UK you almost never need to handle an APK yourself: licensed casino apps are on Google Play, and a website asking you to download one is a reason to slow down.

Key takeaways

  • An APK is the installer file behind every Android app, including casino apps from Google Play.
  • All five casinos we cover have apps on Google Play in the UK, so there is no need to download a casino APK from a website.
  • Installing an APK outside Google Play means switching on ‘Install unknown apps’ and losing automatic updates.
  • Always match the developer name on the listing to the licence holder on the UKGC register.

What an APK file is

Think of an APK as a sealed parcel. Inside sit the app’s compiled code, its images and sounds, a manifest that lists which app permissions it may ask for, and a digital signature from whoever built it. When you tap Install on Google Play, your phone receives the parcel, checks the signature and unpacks it into a working app with an icon on your home screen.

The letters stand for Android Package Kit, and the file name ends in .apk. Apple’s iPhone and iPad use a different format, so an APK cannot be opened on iOS at all. If a site offers an APK to an iPhone user, it has either mixed up its platforms or is not a site to trust.

  • Code: the instructions that draw the lobby, cashier and menus.
  • Manifest: a list of the permissions and Android features the app needs.
  • Resources: logos, fonts, sounds and layout files.
  • Signature: a certificate proving which developer built the file and that it hasn’t been altered.

APK files and Google Play: what actually lands on your phone

Since August 2021 Google has required new apps on Google Play to be uploaded as Android App Bundles rather than single APK files. Play then builds slimmer APKs matched to your phone’s screen, processor and language. The result is still an APK on your device, just one tailored to it, which is one reason Play downloads are often smaller than a one-size-fits-all file from a website.

Why casino APK downloads still appear online

Years ago, Google kept real-money gambling apps out of its UK store, so British operators offered their Android apps as APK downloads from their own websites. That changed: Google Play now allows real-money gambling apps in Great Britain from licensed operators it has approved, and Coral, Ladbrokes, PlayOJO, Casumo and 10bet all have listings there. The old download buttons have largely gone.

The APK links you still see tend to come from two places: out-of-date pages, and sites that are not licensed by the UK Gambling Commission and so cannot pass Google’s checks. The second group is the real problem. If a casino can only reach you through a file on its own website, ask why it isn’t on Google Play. Our page on casino APK downloads covers the background in more detail.

If a casino app you expected to find doesn’t appear in your Play Store search, check the reasons in casino apps not on Google Play before reaching for an APK.

Risks of installing a casino APK from outside Google Play

Installing an APK yourself is called sideloading. Android lets you do it, but you take on checks that the store would otherwise carry out. With a gambling app those checks matter more than usual, because the app will hold your debit card details, your ID documents and your balance.

  • Tampered files: a copy of a real casino app can be repackaged with extra code that reads your screen or your texts.
  • Unlicensed operators: many APK-only casinos have no UK licence, so UK rules on stake limits, deposit limits and complaints don’t protect you.
  • No updates: security fixes and the latest safer gambling tools only reach you if you remember to fetch a new file.
  • A setting left open: once you allow your browser to install unknown apps, it stays allowed until you switch it off.

How to check a casino app’s developer on Android

The developer name sits under the app title on every Google Play listing. For a UK casino it should match, or clearly belong to, the company named on the casino’s licence. The listings we checked on 20 October 2026 show the following.

Casino appDeveloper shown on Google PlayUKGC licence holder
Coral CasinoLC International LimitedLC International Limited (54743)
Ladbrokes CasinoLadbrokes Mobile Development (contact: LC International Limited)LC International Limited (54743)
PlayOJOSkill On Net LtdSkill On Net Limited (39326)
CasumoCasumo Services LimitedRecro Limited (61549)
10betBlue Star Planet LtdBlue Star Planet Limited (43173)

A developer name that differs from the licence holder isn’t automatically a warning sign, because groups often publish through a sister company, as Casumo does. What matters is that the link is clear and the casino’s own website points to the same listing. Our guide to checking a casino app developer walks through it screen by screen.

APK size, storage and updates on your phone

Casino apps carry a lot of artwork, so they are not small. Google Play doesn’t show a single fixed size for most listings any more, because the APK you get depends on your device. If space is tight, check Settings, then Storage, before installing; our page on low-storage phones suggests what to clear.

Updates arrive as new APKs. With Play’s auto-update switched on they install in the background, often overnight on Wi-Fi. When a casino retires an old version, the app may show an ‘update required’ screen at launch; the fix is to open Google Play, find the app and tap Update, as our updating casino apps guide explains.

  • Sideloading: installing an app from outside the official store.
  • Native app: an app built for one platform and installed from a package such as an APK.
  • Progressive web app: a website you add to your home screen without any APK.
  • App permissions: the access an APK’s manifest says the app may request.

Frequently asked questions

What does APK stand for?

APK stands for Android Package Kit, sometimes called Android Package. It is the single file that contains everything an Android app needs to install: compiled code, images, sounds, a manifest of permissions and a signature from the developer. You rarely see the file itself, because Google Play downloads and unpacks it for you when you tap Install. iPhones use a different format, so APKs only matter on Android phones and tablets. Our Android casino apps page explains which casino apps are available through Google Play in the UK.

Is it safe to download a casino APK in the UK?

It is far safer to install casino apps from Google Play than from an APK on a website. Play listings for real-money gambling apps in Great Britain come only from licensed operators Google has approved, and they update automatically. A downloaded file has no such checks, could be tampered with and often comes from an unlicensed site. All five casinos we cover are on Google Play, so there is no need for a separate download. If you are unsure, follow our guide to spotting fake casino apps before installing anything.

Why can’t I find a casino app on Google Play?

The usual reasons are that the operator hasn’t published an app in the UK, your phone doesn’t have Google services, or Play thinks your account or phone is set to another country. Huawei phones sold since 2019 lack Google Play, and Amazon Fire tablets use Amazon’s own store. In those cases the casino’s mobile website is a safer route than a downloaded APK. Our help page on casino apps not on Google Play and the Huawei device guide cover the fixes step by step.

Can I install an APK on an iPhone?

No, an APK cannot be installed on an iPhone or iPad. Apple devices use a different package format and, for UK users, install apps through the App Store. Any website offering an APK to iPhone owners is either confused or not trustworthy. On iOS, real-money casino apps appear on the UK App Store only from licensed operators, and all five casinos we cover publish their apps there. Our guide to installing casino apps on iPhone explains the steps, including what to do when an app won’t appear in search.

Do I lose my bonus or balance if I reinstall a casino app?

No, reinstalling a casino app does not touch your balance or any active bonus, because those are stored in your casino account rather than inside the APK. The app is only a front end to the same account you would use on the website. Deleting it clears local data such as saved login details and recently played games, so you may need to sign in again and set up biometric login once more. Our help page on whether deleting a casino app closes your account explains the difference in full.

What is the ‘Install unknown apps’ setting?

‘Install unknown apps’ is the Android permission that lets a particular app, usually your browser or file manager, install APK files from outside Google Play. Since Android 8.0 it is granted app by app rather than switched on for the whole phone. You don’t need it for any of the casino apps we cover, because they are on Google Play. If you turned it on in the past, open Settings, search for ‘unknown apps’ and switch it off for each app listed. Our Android install guide shows the screens involved.

How do I know an APK is from a licensed UK casino?

Start with the licence, not the file. Find the casino’s operator name in the footer of its website, look it up on the Gambling Commission’s public register and note the account number. Then search Google Play for the casino and confirm the developer name matches or clearly belongs to that company. If the operator only offers its Android app as a website download, treat that as a warning sign. Our guide on how to check a casino licence explains each step on a phone.
