Native app: meaning for casino players

A native app is software built for one operating system, such as iOS or Android, and installed from that platform’s store. Most UK casino apps are native shells around web-based games: the menus, login and cashier are built for your phone, while the slots and live tables load inside the app much as they would in a browser.

Key takeaways

  • Native means built for one platform and installed from the App Store or Google Play.
  • Casino apps are usually hybrids: native menus and login, with HTML5 games loaded inside.
  • Native builds can use Face ID, widgets, haptics and Apple Pay sheets more directly than a website.
  • Each native app lists a minimum iOS version, so older iPhones can be left behind.

What ‘native app’ means

‘Native’ describes an app written in the language and toolkit of the platform it runs on: usually Swift or Objective-C for iPhone and iPad, and Kotlin or Java for Android. The code is compiled into a package, an IPA for Apple or an APK for Android, and distributed through the platform’s store. Because it speaks the phone’s own language, a native app can use the hardware directly: the camera, the Secure Enclave behind Face ID, the vibration motor, the widget system and the notification service.

The opposite end of the scale is a pure web app, which runs in the browser and can only use what the browser allows. A progressive web app sits in between: it lives in the browser but installs to the home screen.

Why most casino apps are native shells with web games

Casino lobbies contain thousands of games from dozens of studios, and almost all of those games are built once in HTML5 so they run everywhere. Rebuilding each one natively for iOS and Android would make little sense. So the typical approach is a hybrid: the operator builds the native parts it controls (sign-up, login, account menu, cashier, notifications, safer gambling tools) and opens each game inside a web view, a browser window embedded in the app.

In practice this means a slot looks and plays much the same in the app as on the mobile site, while the app feels quicker to get into and around. It also explains why a game can fail to load while the rest of the app works: the shell is fine, but the web content inside it hasn’t arrived. Our HTML5 games entry explains the game side, and casino app games won’t load covers the fixes.

Native features named in UK casino app listings

Store listings are the best public guide to what a casino’s native build adds. The App Store and Google Play listings we checked on 20 October 2026 show quite different approaches among the five casinos we cover.

Casino appSeparate casino app on iOS?iOS neededSize on App StoreNative features named in listing
Coral CasinoYes, separate from the sportsbookiOS 18.0 or later101.6 MBNot specified beyond games and rewards
Ladbrokes CasinoYes, separate from the sportsbookiOS 18.0 or later101.2 MBNot specified beyond games and rewards
PlayOJOYes, casino-only brandiOS 15.0 or later25.4 MBNot specified beyond games and safer gambling tools
CasumoNo, combined casino and sports appiOS 15.0 or later52.5 MBFace ID and Touch ID, home screen widget, haptic feedback toggle, Apple Pay, quick launch of recent slots
10betNo, combined sports and casino appiOS 16.0 or later112.3 MBNot specified beyond betting and games

‘Not specified’ doesn’t mean a feature is missing, only that the listing doesn’t mention it. Check the app’s settings menu, or the reviews of Coral, Casumo and PlayOJO, for what each build offers.

Native app pros and cons for casino play

Advantages

  • Direct access to biometric login such as Face ID and fingerprint unlock.
  • Store review and a named developer you can match to the licence holder.
  • Push notifications for withdrawals and account messages, if you allow them.
  • Phone features such as widgets, haptics and quick deposit sheets.

Drawbacks

  • Takes storage, sometimes over 100 MB before cached game files.
  • Needs updating; an old version may be blocked with an ‘update required’ screen.
  • Minimum iOS or Android versions can exclude older phones.
  • Games still load from the web, so a weak signal affects play in the same way.

Native app or mobile site: how to choose

A quick way to decide is to start from your phone rather than the casino. If your iPhone is on an older iOS version than the listing requires, the App Store will either offer an older compatible version or nothing at all, and the mobile site is your route; see casino apps on older phones. If storage is tight, the website takes less room. If you want Face ID sign-in and account alerts, the native app is usually the better fit.

  1. Open the App Store or Google Play listing and read the Compatibility or About section.
  2. Compare the iOS or Android version required with Settings, General, About (iPhone) or Settings, About phone (Android).
  3. Check free space in Settings against the listed size, allowing extra for game files.
  4. Confirm the developer matches the casino’s licence holder before installing.
  5. If any check fails, use the casino’s mobile site instead; your account is the same.

Our comparison of app versus mobile site sets out the trade-offs in more depth.

  • Progressive web app: a website that installs to the home screen.
  • HTML5 games: the web-built games loaded inside native casino apps.
  • APK: the Android package a native app is installed from.
  • App age rating: the store rating attached to every native app listing.

Frequently asked questions

Are casino apps native apps?

Mostly, yes, in the sense that they are installed from the App Store or Google Play and built for each platform. Inside, though, they are usually hybrids. The login screen, menus, cashier and account settings are native, while the games themselves are HTML5 titles loaded in an embedded browser view. That is why the same slot looks almost identical in the app and on the mobile website. Our guide to how casino apps are built explains the layers in more detail.

Is a native casino app better than the mobile site?

Neither is better across the board; they suit different situations. The app usually gives you biometric login, notifications and quicker access from the home screen. The mobile site needs no storage, no updates and no minimum iOS version, and works on phones without Google Play. Your balance, bonuses, limits and verification are identical either way, because both connect to the same account. Our page comparing a casino app or mobile site helps you decide which suits your phone and habits.

Why does a native casino app need a recent iOS version?

Developers set a minimum version so they can use newer Apple tools and stop testing on very old systems. The listings we checked range from iOS 15.0 or later for PlayOJO and Casumo, to iOS 16.0 for 10bet and iOS 18.0 for Coral and Ladbrokes. If your iPhone can’t run the required version, the App Store may offer the last compatible release, which may later be blocked by an ‘update required’ message. The mobile site is the fallback. See casino apps on iOS 26 for current version notes.

Do native casino apps have better games?

No. The games come from the same studios and run the same HTML5 code whether you open them in an app or a browser, so the maths, features and RTP versions are set by the casino and game provider, not by the app. An installed app may make finding games quicker, with favourites or a recently played row, but the slot itself is unchanged. UK rules such as 2.5-second spins and no autoplay apply everywhere. Our guide to finding a slot’s RTP in an app shows where to check the live figure.

Can a native app access more of my phone than a website?

It can ask for more, but it only gets what you allow. Native apps can request the camera, location, photos, notifications and biometric checks through the phone’s permission prompts, and you can refuse or later withdraw each one in Settings. Even with Face ID enabled, the app only receives a yes or no from the phone, never your face data. A website is limited to what the browser exposes. Our app permissions entry explains which requests casino apps typically make and why.

How much storage does a native casino app take?

The App Store listings we checked range from 25.4 MB for PlayOJO to 112.3 MB for 10bet, with Coral and Ladbrokes just over 100 MB and Casumo at 52.5 MB. Those are download sizes; the apps grow as they cache images and game files, so allow extra room. Clearing the cache or offloading the app frees space without affecting your account. Google Play sizes vary by device. If space is a constant problem, our low-storage phones guide lists the lightest ways to play.
