A push notification is a message an app sends to your phone’s lock screen or notification centre while the app is closed. Casino apps use them for two quite different jobs: account alerts, such as a withdrawal being approved, and marketing, such as a new game or promotion. You decide which, if any, reach you.
Push notifications are alerts sent by an app to your lock screen, even when the app is closed.
On Android 13 and later, new apps can’t send them until you grant permission; iPhones always ask first.
Account alerts and marketing messages are different things, and you can keep one without the other.
If promotional alerts tempt you to play when you hadn’t planned to, switch them off.

What a push notification is
‘Push’ means the message is sent to you, rather than you going to fetch it. An app’s servers pass the alert to Apple’s or Google’s notification service, which delivers it to your phone. It appears as a banner, a lock-screen card or a badge on the app icon, and tapping it usually opens the relevant screen inside the app.
Push notifications differ from the in-app inbox many casino apps have. Inbox messages only appear when you open the app; push alerts reach you while it’s closed. They also differ from texts and emails, which you control through your casino marketing preferences rather than your phone’s settings.
How push notification permission works on iPhone and Android
Neither platform lets an app send push notifications without your agreement, but they arrive at that agreement differently.
Google’s developer guidance confirms that on Android 13 and later, a newly installed app’s notifications are off by default until you grant the permission. On older Android versions they were on by default, so a casino app installed years ago may still send alerts you never chose. Our app permissions entry covers the other requests casino apps make.
What casino apps use push notifications for
None of the store listings for the five casinos we cover describes its notifications, so the exact alerts vary by app. Broadly, casino notifications fall into the two groups below, and it’s worth judging them separately.
Type
Examples
Worth keeping?
Account and security
Withdrawal approved, new login, password changed
Yes, they help you spot problems
Verification
Documents received or needed
Yes, they can stop a payout stalling
Safer gambling
Limit changes taking effect, time-out ending
Yes, if the app offers them
Promotional
New games, offers, prize draws, tournaments
Only if they don’t prompt unplanned play
Marketing should stop entirely if you self-exclude, and under UK rules casinos must not send marketing to people who have excluded through GAMSTOP or with them directly. Our guide to casino app notifications suggests which to allow and which to mute.
How to turn casino push notifications off
On iPhone, open Settings, then Notifications, find the casino app and switch off Allow Notifications, or keep it on and remove lock-screen and banner alerts.
On Android, press and hold a notification from the app and tap the settings cog, or open Settings, Apps, the casino app, Notifications.
Inside the casino app, open your account, then Marketing preferences or Communication preferences, and untick push, email and SMS marketing.
Check the in-app inbox settings too, as some apps have a separate switch for offer messages.
If you want a break from gambling, use a time-out or self-exclusion; notifications stop with the account rather than just the phone.
A promotional alert at 10pm is designed to get you to open the app. That’s fine if you were planning to play anyway; it’s not fine if it turns a quiet evening into an unplanned session. Gambling is entertainment that costs money, and losses are likely over time, so play when you’ve chosen to rather than when your phone suggests it. If you notice alerts pulling you back, mute them and set a deposit limit. Free, confidential support is available from the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133 and from GamCare.

Frequently asked questions
Should I allow notifications from a casino app?
It depends what they’re for and how they affect you. Account and security alerts, such as a withdrawal approved or a new device signing in, are useful and help you spot problems. Promotional alerts are optional and can prompt sessions you hadn’t planned. A sensible middle ground is to allow notifications on the phone but switch off marketing in the app’s communication preferences, or decline the prompt entirely and check the app when you choose. Our page on casino app notifications suggests what to keep.
Why am I still getting casino notifications after turning them off?
Usually because they’re arriving through a different channel. Phone settings only control push alerts; emails and texts are governed by your marketing preferences inside the casino account, and in-app inbox messages appear whenever you open the app. Check all three. If you’ve self-excluded and are still receiving marketing, contact the casino, as UK-licensed operators must not market to self-excluded customers. A second app on the phone, such as a sportsbook from the same brand, can also send alerts. Our marketing preferences guide shows where each switch is.
Do I need notifications to claim casino offers?
Not for the offers we list. Ladbrokes’ new-customer spins, for example, are claimed from the app’s inbox before 23:59 each day, and the inbox works whether or not push alerts are on. Coral’s spins need accepting within 48 hours of qualifying, which you do inside the app. Offers carry their own terms on deposit, stake and expiry, so read them rather than relying on alerts. Our guide to claiming free spins in an app covers where offers appear and how long you have.
Can a casino app send notifications if I don’t open it?
Yes, once you’ve allowed them. Push notifications are designed to reach you while the app is closed, so a casino app can alert you about a withdrawal or a promotion even if you haven’t opened it for weeks. Deleting the app stops push alerts completely, though emails and texts continue unless you change your preferences or close the account. On iPhone, Settings, Notifications shows every app allowed to alert you. Our help page on whether deleting a casino app closes your account explains the difference.
Are casino push notifications allowed under UK rules?
Yes, when they follow the rules. Marketing from UK-licensed casinos must be socially responsible, must not target people who have self-excluded and needs your consent where electronic marketing law requires it. It must also avoid pressure tactics and describe offers fairly, with significant terms clear. You can withdraw consent at any time. If you think a casino’s notification breaks these rules, raise it with the casino first, then use the complaint route described in our guide on how to complain about a casino app.
How do I stop casino notifications at night?
Use your phone’s quiet-hours tools. On iPhone, set up a Sleep or Personal Focus that silences the casino app between chosen hours, or put it into Scheduled Summary so its alerts arrive in a single batch. On Android, Do Not Disturb or Modes can block the app overnight. Turning off promotional alerts altogether is simpler still. If late-night play is becoming a habit, the casino’s reality checks and time limits can help, and the National Gambling Helpline is available on 0808 8020 133, 24 hours a day.
