A VPN (virtual private network) encrypts your phone’s internet traffic and sends it through a server elsewhere, so websites and apps see that server’s address instead of yours. VPNs are legal in the UK and useful on public Wi-Fi, but casino apps treat them warily: they can trigger location blocks, and using one to hide where you are usually breaks a casino’s terms.
A VPN hides your real IP address and encrypts traffic between your phone and the VPN server.
Using a VPN is legal in the UK, but casino terms commonly ban using one to disguise your location.
A VPN set to another country is the most common cause of ‘not available in your region’ errors.
Pause the VPN, or exclude the casino app from it, before you open the casino.

What a VPN does
Normally your phone connects straight to the internet through your broadband or mobile network, and every app you use sees that network’s address, known as your IP address. A VPN app adds a step: it builds an encrypted tunnel from your phone to a server run by the VPN company, and your traffic leaves from there. Apps now see the server’s address, which may be in another town or another country.
That does two things. It stops people on the same Wi-Fi from reading your traffic, and it changes your apparent geolocation. The first is helpful in a café; the second is what causes trouble with casino apps.
What casino terms say about VPNs
Using a VPN isn’t against UK law. But licensed casinos have duties to know their customers and to prevent fraud, and a connection that appears to come from somewhere other than where the customer lives is a classic warning sign. Casino terms therefore commonly prohibit using a VPN, proxy or similar tool to disguise your location, and reserve the right to suspend an account or withhold winnings while they investigate.
Check the exact wording in each casino’s terms and conditions, usually in the app under Help or in the footer of the account menu. The guide to understanding casino app terms and conditions shows where to find the relevant clauses.
Never use a VPN to get around a self-exclusion, a block in your current country or a casino’s refusal to serve you. Those restrictions exist for legal or safer gambling reasons, and getting round them can lose you both your balance and your protections.
VPNs and casino apps: common situations
Most players who hit a VPN problem didn’t set out to hide anything. The table covers the usual cases.

Follow the casino’s rules for that country; don’t mask it
VPN, public Wi-Fi and account security
The best reason to use a VPN is security on networks you don’t control. Casino apps already encrypt their own connections, so a VPN adds little for the app itself, while risking a location flag. A simpler approach for gambling is to switch to mobile data whenever you’d otherwise use public Wi-Fi. The public Wi-Fi guide explains the trade-offs, and Wi-Fi vs mobile data covers data use.
How to pause a VPN for a casino app
On iPhone, open Settings and switch off VPN near the top, or disconnect inside the VPN app.
On Android, open Settings, Network & internet (or Connections), VPN, and disconnect. Check ‘Always-on VPN’ isn’t enabled for it.
If your VPN app supports split tunnelling, add the casino app to the list of apps that bypass the VPN.
Force-close the casino app and reopen it so it picks up your normal connection.
If an error persists, try switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data, then contact support.

Frequently asked questions
Can you use a VPN on UK casino apps?
You can technically connect, but it’s usually a bad idea. Casino terms commonly ban using a VPN to disguise your location, and many casinos block VPN server addresses outright, which produces location errors. If you’re in the UK, the simplest fix is to pause the VPN while you use the casino app. If you’re abroad, the casino needs to see where you really are to apply the right rules. Our help page on whether you can use a VPN on casino apps covers each scenario in more depth.
Is using a VPN illegal in the UK?
No. VPNs are legal to buy and use in the UK, and many people use them for work or for privacy on public Wi-Fi. What can cause problems is what you do through one. Using a VPN to get around a casino’s terms, a self-exclusion or another country’s gambling laws can lead to an account being suspended and, depending on where you are, may break local law. A VPN doesn’t change which rules apply to you. Our page on whether casino apps are legal in the UK explains the licensing position.
Will a casino keep my winnings if I used a VPN?
It depends on the casino’s terms and what the VPN was used for. Terms commonly allow a casino to suspend an account and withhold winnings while it investigates a breach, including location masking, and to void winnings where the terms were broken. Accidentally leaving a UK-based VPN on is treated very differently from deliberately hiding play from a blocked country. If a withdrawal is held, contact support, explain honestly and supply any documents asked for. Our page on complaining about a casino app covers next steps.
Why does my casino app say it’s not available in my region?
The most common reason is a VPN, relay or proxy making your connection appear to come from another country. Other causes include roaming abroad, a work network that routes traffic overseas, or a casino that doesn’t serve the country you’re visiting. Turn off any VPN, restart the app and try again on mobile data. If you’re in the UK with no VPN and still see the message, contact the casino’s support team. Our casino app location error page walks through each fix.
Should I use a VPN for security on public Wi-Fi?
A VPN is a good general tool on public Wi-Fi, but for casino apps a simpler answer is to use mobile data instead. Licensed casino apps already encrypt the connection between your phone and their servers, so a VPN adds little to that particular session while risking a location flag. Avoid logging in to a casino on a shared or unknown network, and keep your phone and apps updated. Our guide to casino apps on public Wi-Fi sets out the safest approach.
Can a VPN get around GAMSTOP?
No, and it shouldn’t be tried. GAMSTOP works by account details, not by location, so UK-licensed casinos refuse your account whatever network you use. The only way to get round it is to use unlicensed casinos, which offer none of the UK’s protections on stakes, limits or complaints. If you’ve self-excluded and are tempted to gamble, the National Gambling Helpline, 0808 8020 133, offers support around the clock, as does GamCare. Our page on GAMSTOP and casino apps explains how the scheme works.
