Keno apps on your phone

Keno apps let you pick up to around ten numbers from 80, then watch 20 balls drawn at random, with payouts depending on how many of your picks match. The odds are fixed by simple maths, the paytable decides the return, and on a phone the whole game fits on one portrait screen.

Key takeaways

  • Twenty of 80 numbers are drawn each game, so any single pick has a 25% chance of being hit.
  • Catching all your numbers gets very unlikely very fast: about 1 in 1,550 for five picks and 1 in 8.9 million for ten.
  • The paytable sets the return; two keno games with identical draws can have very different RTPs.
  • UK rules mean no auto-draws and at least 5 seconds per game in casino apps.

How keno apps work: the draw in plain English

Keno is a lottery-style game. The screen shows a board of 80 numbers. You choose how many ‘spots’ to play, tap that many numbers (or let the app pick them), set a stake and start the draw. The game then draws 20 numbers at random. The more of your spots that match, known as ‘catches’, the higher the payout, according to a paytable that depends on how many spots you picked.

In casino apps the draw is run by a random number generator, tested before the game goes live. There are no hot or cold numbers: each game is independent, and a number that came up five times in a row is no more or less likely next time.

Keno usually sits in the instant win, arcade or ‘other games’ section of a casino app, rather than with slots or table games. Our instant win games apps page covers that whole category.

Keno odds for every common pick

Because 20 of the 80 numbers are drawn, keno odds can be calculated exactly. The table shows your chance of catching all your spots, and of catching all but one. These figures are the same in every fair 80-ball keno game, on any app or website.

Spots pickedCatch allCatch all but one
125% (1 in 4)–
26.0% (about 1 in 17)38% (1 of 2)
31.4% (about 1 in 72)13.9% (2 of 3)
40.31% (about 1 in 326)4.3% (3 of 4)
50.065% (about 1 in 1,550)1.2% (4 of 5)
6about 1 in 7,7500.31% (5 of 6)
7about 1 in 41,0000.073% (6 of 7)
8about 1 in 230,000about 1 in 6,200 (7 of 8)
10about 1 in 8.9 millionabout 1 in 163,000 (9 of 10)

The pattern explains why big keno payouts exist: they are attached to outcomes that almost never happen. Most paytables pay something for partial catches, and some pay a small amount for catching zero on large picks, which is how they keep the hit rate tolerable.

Reading a keno paytable and its RTP

The draw is fixed maths; the paytable is the operator’s choice of how much to pay for each result. That makes keno a perfect place to see how RTP works. Take a one-spot game. Your number hits 25% of the time. If a hit pays 3 times your stake in total, the long-run return is 0.25 × 3 = 75%. If it pays 3.8 times, the return is 0.25 × 3.8 = 95%. Same draw, very different value.

Paytable for a hitExpected hitsExpected returnedRTP
3× stake25£7575%
3.5× stake25£87.5087.5%
3.8× stake25£9595%

Real results over 100 games will wander well away from these averages, because chance does that over short runs. RTP describes the very long run. Online RNG keno usually publishes its RTP in the help screen, and the figure differs between paytables and sometimes between pick sizes within the same game. Traditional land-based keno is often quoted as having a much larger house edge than online versions, so don’t assume one figure applies everywhere.

The keno screen in portrait and landscape

Keno suits a phone better than most casino games. The 80-number board is usually laid out as eight rows of ten in portrait, filling the middle of the screen. Your selected numbers light up in one colour, drawn numbers in another, and catches in a third. Underneath sit the stake selector, a Quick Pick button, Clear, and the Play or Draw button.

  • Quick Pick chooses random numbers for you; it is no better or worse than picking your own.
  • Clear wipes your selection so you can change the number of spots.
  • Stake is set per game with plus and minus buttons, with the minimum and maximum shown in the help screen.
  • Paytable usually updates live as you add spots, so you can see the payout for each catch before you play.

Number squares on a small phone can be cramped. If you mis-tap often, try landscape, which some games support with a wider board, or use the accessibility settings on your phone to enlarge touch targets.

How to play keno in a casino app, step by step

  1. Open the casino app, go to the search bar and type ‘keno’, or browse Instant Win or Arcade.
  2. Tap the game, then open the help or ‘i’ screen and note the RTP and paytable.
  3. Choose how many spots to play. Fewer spots mean smaller but more frequent payouts.
  4. Tap your numbers on the board or press Quick Pick.
  5. Set your stake and check the balance shown at the top of the screen.
  6. Tap Play. The 20 numbers are drawn one by one, and catches are highlighted as they land.
  7. Any win is added to your balance. To play again with the same numbers, tap Play again; each game needs a new tap.

Keno variants on mobile

Most app versions follow the classic 80-ball format, but developers add twists. Some add a multiplier, where a special ball or a random wheel multiplies wins on that draw; the paytable is adjusted to pay for it, so the RTP doesn’t automatically rise. Some offer more picks, up to 15 or 20, with rare top prizes. Others use a smaller board, such as 40 numbers with fewer balls, which changes every probability in the table above.

Lottery-style draws inside some apps look similar but follow a schedule rather than playing instantly. Those are closer to daily jackpot games in pace.

Keno myths and what really affects results

BeliefReality
Hot numbers are due to keep comingEach draw is independent; past results change nothing
Cold numbers are ‘due’Also false; the generator has no memory
Picking a pattern on the board helpsEvery set of numbers has the same chance
More spots means better valueValue depends on the paytable, not the number of spots
Quick Pick is worse than your own picksBoth give exactly the same odds

The only real levers you have are which paytable you choose (higher RTP costs you less over time) and how much you stake. No system can overcome the house edge.

UK rules that apply to keno apps

Keno in a UK casino app counts as an online casino game. Since 17 January 2025 that means at least five seconds per game, no autoplay and no turbo or quick-draw features. Older keno games often had a ‘multi-draw’ or ‘auto’ button that played 10 or 20 games in a row; versions served to players in Great Britain don’t. The app must also show your net position and how long you’ve been playing.

The £5 and £2 per-spin stake limits are written for slots, so keno has its own stake range set by the game. You must pass age checks before playing, including demo versions, and you can’t fund play with a credit card. For the full list, see UK casino app rule changes in 2026.

Sensible ways to approach keno on a phone

  • Pick the version with the highest published RTP for the number of spots you like.
  • Set a per-session budget and a session limit before you start.
  • Expect long runs without a big catch, especially with seven or more spots.
  • Keep keno as an occasional game, not a way to win back losses from elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions

What are the odds of winning keno on an app?

Your odds depend on how many numbers you pick, and they are the same in every fair 80-ball game. A single pick hits 25% of the time, because 20 of the 80 numbers are drawn. Catching all of five picks happens about once in 1,550 games, and all ten about once in 8.9 million. Whether a win is worth having depends on the paytable, so check the RTP in the help screen. Our house edge entry and how casino app games work explain the maths behind it.

How many numbers should you pick in keno?

There is no best number of picks; it only changes the shape of your results. Fewer spots give smaller wins more often, while eight or ten spots give rare, larger wins with long losing runs in between. The value depends on the paytable for that number of spots, which can vary within the same game, so compare the RTP listed for each. Choose the style that suits your budget, and remember that none of them beats the house edge. Our guide on volatility explains how this feels in practice.

Is online keno rigged?

No, keno in a licensed UK casino app uses a tested random number generator, and the results can’t be adjusted for individual players. The Gambling Commission requires operators to use games that have been tested by approved labs, and the draw has no memory of past results. What decides your long-run return is the paytable, which is published in the game. If a result looks wrong, your game history shows the full draw. See are casino apps rigged and how casino apps are tested.

Can you play keno on autoplay in the UK?

No, autoplay isn’t allowed on online casino games for players in Great Britain. Since 17 January 2025 the Gambling Commission’s design rules have banned autoplay and features that speed up play on casino games, and set a minimum of five seconds per game. Older keno titles with a multi-draw button have had it removed for UK players. Each draw now needs its own tap, and your net position stays on screen. Our autoplay glossary entry explains the history of the ban, which began with slots in 2021.

Where is keno in a casino app?

Keno usually lives in the instant win, arcade or ‘other games’ category rather than with slots or table games. The quickest way to find it is to tap the search icon and type ‘keno’. If nothing appears, the app doesn’t currently offer it, as game libraries change regularly. Once you’ve found a version you like, add it to your favourites so it appears on your home screen in the app. Our guides to finding games in a casino app and favourites and recent games show how.

Does Quick Pick change the odds in keno?

No, Quick Pick gives exactly the same odds as choosing your own numbers. It simply selects random numbers from the board for you. Every combination of numbers has the same chance of being drawn, whether it is a neat row, your birthday or a random spread. Quick Pick saves taps on a small phone screen and nothing more. If you prefer to pick your own, that is fine too; it won’t make any difference to the result. Our how casino app games work page explains why.

Is keno a good game for a low budget?

Keno can run on small stakes, but a low minimum bet doesn’t make it cheap if you play many games. Each game lasts at least five seconds under UK rules, so a 10p stake over an hour can still add up to a large total staked. Choose a version with a published RTP you’re comfortable with, set a session budget, and use the app’s deposit limits. Our pages on low deposit casino apps and setting a gambling budget on your phone have practical tips.

Can I play keno for free?

You can sometimes play demo keno, but only after verifying your age with the casino. UK operators have had to confirm players are 18 or over before allowing free-to-play games since May 2019. Demo versions use the same paytable and draw as the real game, which makes them useful for learning the buttons. Wins in demo mode have no cash value. Our demo mode verification page explains why the check is needed and what documents may be asked for.
