Poker apps UK players download fall into two groups: casino apps where you play poker variants against the house, and poker-room apps where you play other people and the operator takes a rake. Both run on iPhone and Android under a UK Gambling Commission licence, but the maths, the pace and the screens are completely different.
Casino poker (Casino Hold’em, Three Card Poker) is you against the house; poker rooms are you against other players, with the operator taking a rake.
House edges on casino poker are commonly quoted at roughly 2% to 5% on the main bet, and side bets usually cost more.
From 17 January 2025, casino games need at least 5 seconds per round with no autoplay, but peer-to-peer poker is excluded from the 5-second rule.
Our partner casinos list table and live games, but none publishes a poker room, so check each app’s lobby before you deposit.

Poker apps UK: casino poker vs poker rooms
The word ‘poker’ covers two products that only share the hand rankings. In a casino poker game you sit at a virtual or live table and play your hand against the dealer. The rules give the casino a built-in house edge, exactly as in blackjack or roulette. In a poker room you play against other people, nobody at the table works for the operator, and the operator earns a small slice of each pot or tournament entry, known as the rake.
This matters on a phone because the two products usually live in different apps. Big sportsbook-and-casino brands tend to put Casino Hold’em, Three Card Poker and Caribbean Stud inside the casino app’s table or live section. A poker room is normally a separate download with its own lobby, cashier screen and tournament schedule, even when the wallet is shared.

Every poker app uses the same ladder of hands. The chances below are for any five cards dealt from a fresh 52-card deck, which is how Caribbean Stud and five-card video poker deal. In Hold’em games you build the best five from seven cards, so strong hands turn up more often, but the order never changes.

Casino poker games you’ll find in UK casino apps
Casino poker games are built for quick hands against the house. These three are the most common in UK lobbies, either as RNG (computer-dealt) tables or streamed with a real dealer in the live casino section.
Casino Hold’em
You place an ante, get two cards, see three community cards, then either fold or call with a bet of twice the ante. The dealer needs a pair of fours or better to qualify. The commonly quoted house edge on the ante with best play is a little over 2%. Our Casino Hold’em apps page goes through the decisions in full.
Three Card Poker
You play three cards against the dealer’s three, with an Ante/Play game and an optional Pair Plus bet that pays on your hand alone. Straights beat flushes here because they are rarer with three cards. See Three Card Poker apps for strategy and paytables.
Caribbean Stud
Five cards each, one dealer card face up, and a raise of twice the ante if you continue. It is slower and has a higher commonly quoted edge, around 5% of the ante. Our Caribbean Stud apps guide covers the qualifying rules.
Game
Main bet edge
Side bet note
Casino Hold’em
About 2.2% of the ante
AA bonus side bet is usually higher
Three Card Poker
About 3.4% of the ante
Pair Plus depends on the paytable
Caribbean Stud
About 5.2% of the ante
Progressive side bets are usually much higher
Video poker (Jacks or Better)
Depends on paytable

These are long-run averages from standard rules, not a promise for any session. Tables can change paytables, so the help screen in the game you open is the figure that counts.
How poker tables work on an iPhone or Android screen
Casino poker tables on a phone are mostly built for portrait. The cards sit in the top half, your chip rack runs along the bottom, and decision buttons (Fold, Call, Raise, Deal) appear only when it is your turn. Tap a chip to select its value, then tap the betting circle; a long press or double tap on some tables repeats the last bet. Live tables usually show the video at the top with the betting grid underneath, and you can rotate to landscape for a bigger stream.
Poker-room apps lean heavily on gestures. Swipe up to raise, drag a slider to size your bet, and use preset buttons for half-pot or full-pot raises. Each decision has a timer, shown as a ring around your avatar, plus a ‘time bank’ that tops up between hands. If the app is closed or the screen locks mid-hand, the room normally folds or checks for you when your timer expires.
Turn off auto-lock while playing a long tournament, or the screen sleeping can cost you a hand.
Use Face ID login so you’re back at the table quickly after the app reloads.
Mute chat and table animations if you find them distracting; the settings cog sits in a corner of the table.
On a smaller phone, check the card and chip sizes in display settings before you sit down.
How to play a hand of Casino Hold’em in an app
Here is a typical hand on an RNG table. Button names vary between developers, but the order is the same.
Open the casino app, tap Table Games (or Live Casino) and search ‘Hold’em’.
Tap the ‘i’ icon and read the paytable, the dealer’s qualifying hand and the published RTP.
Choose a chip and tap the Ante circle. Leave the side bet circle empty unless you have read its paytable.
Tap Deal. Your two cards and the first three community cards appear.
Decide: tap Call to place a bet of twice your ante, or Fold to give up the ante.
The turn and river cards are dealt, the dealer reveals two cards and the app settles the bets.
Check the balance and net position display at the top of the screen before you start the next hand.
Because UK rules require at least five seconds per round and ban autoplay on casino games, there is no button to deal a run of hands for you. Every hand starts with your tap.
Poker room apps: tournaments, cash games and rake
A poker room charges you to sit down rather than building an edge into every hand. In cash games the rake is a percentage of each pot taken up to a cap, and many rooms take nothing if a hand ends before the flop. In tournaments you pay a fee on top of the buy-in, written as something like £10 + £1. Each room publishes its rake schedule, usually under Help or Cashier.
Peer-to-peer poker is excluded from the 5-second minimum that applies to casino games, so fast-fold and short-handed formats are still allowed. That makes it easy to play far more hands per hour than you would at a live table. Reality checks and session limits matter here; our page on reality checks explains how to set them.
Brands that run their own poker rooms are profiled neutrally in our brand pages, for example the PokerStars casino app. Before you install any poker app, make sure the developer name on the store listing matches the licence holder on the UKGC register.
Live dealer poker: data, battery and connection
Live Casino Hold’em and other live poker tables are video streams, so they use much more data than RNG tables, which only download small graphics files. Streams adapt to your signal: if the picture goes soft, the app has dropped to a lower quality to keep you connected. On a weak signal, a bet can miss the betting window and you’ll see a ‘bets closed’ message.
Play live tables on Wi-Fi where you can; our Wi-Fi vs mobile data guide explains the trade-offs.
Lower the stream quality in the table settings if your data allowance is tight.
Screen brightness and video decoding drain battery faster than anything else in a casino app.
If you disconnect mid-hand, the game result still stands; the hand history in your account shows how it settled.
UK rules that shape poker apps
Every real-money poker app available to UK players must be run by a Gambling Commission licensee, and Apple and Google only accept real-money gambling apps from licensed operators. Several rules apply on top of that.

Honest tips for poker on your phone
Learn the correct decisions for Casino Hold’em or Three Card Poker before playing for money; mistakes add to the house edge.
Treat side bets as optional extras with a higher cost, not as a way to boost results.
In poker rooms, start at the lowest stakes and read the rake schedule; at micro-stakes, rake is a large share of the money in play.
Set a deposit limit before your first session and use time-outs if a session runs long.
Poker costs money over time like any casino game. Play with a budget you’re happy to spend on entertainment.

Frequently asked questions
Are poker apps legal in the UK?
Yes, real-money poker apps are legal in the UK when the operator holds a Gambling Commission licence. Apple only allows real-money gambling apps from licensed operators on the UK App Store, and Google Play only lists approved licensed operators for Great Britain. You must be 18 or over and pass identity checks before you play. Before installing, compare the developer name on the listing with the licence holder on the public register; our guide on checking a casino licence shows where to look, and are casino apps legal in the UK covers the wider picture.
What is the difference between casino poker and a poker room?
Casino poker is played against the house, while a poker room matches you against other players. In Casino Hold’em or Three Card Poker the payouts are set so the casino keeps a small percentage over time, whatever you do. In a poker room the operator has no stake in who wins a hand and instead charges rake on pots or an entry fee on tournaments. Casino poker usually sits in the table games or live casino part of a casino app, whereas poker rooms tend to come as separate apps.
Can you win money on poker apps?
You can win individual hands and sessions, but nothing is guaranteed and most players lose over time. In casino poker the house edge, often quoted at around 2% to 5% of the main bet, works against you on every hand. In poker rooms results depend on how you play compared with others, and rake is taken from the pots. Winnings are not taxed in the UK. Treat poker as paid entertainment and see our page on whether casino apps pay real money for how withdrawals work.
Which poker game has the lowest house edge in a casino app?
Casino Hold’em usually has the lowest commonly quoted edge of the table poker games, at a little over 2% of the ante with correct play. Three Card Poker’s Ante/Play game is usually quoted at about 3.4%, and Caribbean Stud at around 5%. Some video poker paytables return more than any of these with perfect strategy, but only on full-pay versions. Always check the RTP in the game’s help screen, because the version in your app may differ. Our house edge entry explains how these figures are worked out.
Do UK poker apps have autoplay?
No, casino poker games offered to players in Great Britain can’t have autoplay. Since 17 January 2025 the Gambling Commission’s game design rules have banned autoplay and turbo features on online casino games and set a minimum of five seconds per round. That means every Casino Hold’em or Three Card Poker hand starts with your own tap. Peer-to-peer poker in a poker room is excluded from the five-second rule, because the pace depends on the players. Read more in our UK slot and game design rules guide.
Is live dealer poker available on mobile?
Yes, many UK casino apps stream live poker tables such as Casino Hold’em to phones and tablets. The video appears at the top of the screen in portrait, with chips and bet buttons below, and you can turn the phone sideways for a larger picture. Live tables use far more data than computer-dealt ones, so Wi-Fi is the better choice for long sessions. Availability changes, so search the live lobby in your app. Our guide to how live casino streams work explains the technology.
Can I play poker for free on a UK app?
Some apps offer demo versions of casino poker, but only after you have verified your age. Since May 2019, UK operators have had to confirm you are 18 or over before letting you play free-to-play versions of their games. Demo tables use the same rules as the paid version, so they are useful for learning the buttons and decisions. Peer-to-peer poker rooms sometimes run play-money tables too. Our page on free casino apps explains what demo play covers and what it doesn’t.
What does rake mean in poker apps?
Rake is the fee a poker room takes for hosting a game, usually a small percentage of each pot up to a fixed cap. In tournaments the fee appears as a second figure next to the buy-in, such as £5 + 50p. The rake schedule is published in the poker app’s help or cashier section. At low stakes it is a big share of the money on the table, so it affects results more than many players expect. Our rake glossary entry walks through a worked example.
Do slot stake limits apply to poker apps?
No, the £5 and £2 per-spin limits apply only to online slots. They came in during 2025: £5 per spin for players aged 25 and over, and £2 for those aged 18 to 24. Table poker games have their own minimum and maximum bets, set by the game and shown on the table or in the help screen. You can still set your own deposit and loss limits in the app’s safer gambling menu. See casino app maximum stake for how the limits work across game types.
