Casino app display settings and dark mode

Casino app display settings and dark mode are mostly controlled by your phone, not the casino: switching on dark mode changes system menus, keyboards and some account pages, but most casino lobbies already use a dark design and the games themselves never change. Brightness, text size, rotation lock and auto-lock matter more for how a session actually looks and feels.

Key takeaways

  • Most casino apps use their own dark-style design, so turning on system dark mode changes less than you might expect.
  • Games and live streams keep their own colours whatever your phone's theme.
  • Rotation lock decides whether a game can switch between portrait and landscape.
  • On OLED screens, dark layouts and lower brightness both help battery life.
  • Your phone's screen lock and the casino's session timeout are separate; one doesn't control the other.

Casino app display settings and dark mode at a glance

There are two places to change how a casino app looks: your phone's settings, which apply to every app, and occasionally a theme or layout option inside the casino app itself. In practice, the phone does most of the work. The table below shows what each common setting changes when you're using a casino app.

SettingEffect in a casino app
Dark mode / dark themeSystem pop-ups, keyboards, share sheets, Apple Pay and Google Pay sheets, and some account pages
BrightnessEverything on screen, including games and live streams
Text sizeMenus and account pages; rarely the games
Display zoom / screen zoomEverything gets larger, which can crowd lobby layouts
Rotation lockWhether games and live tables can turn to landscape
Night Shift / Night Light / Eye comfortWarmer colours across the whole screen
Refresh rate (60Hz, 120Hz)How smooth scrolling and animations look; affects battery
Auto-Lock / screen timeoutHow long before the screen sleeps if you don't touch it

None of this changes the games' results. A slot outcome is decided on the game provider's server the moment you tap spin; display settings only affect how the animation reaches your eyes. Our explainer on how casino app games work covers that process.

Why most casino apps look dark already

Open almost any UK casino app at midday with your phone in light mode, and you'll probably still see a dark lobby: deep navy, charcoal or black backgrounds with bright game tiles. Casino brands design this way because colourful game artwork stands out against a dark surround, and because many sessions happen in the evening.

Because the casino has fixed its own colours, the app often ignores the system setting. Switching your phone to dark mode won't make a bright app dark, and switching to light mode won't brighten a dark one. Where an app does respond, the change usually shows up in its native parts: the settings screen, login page, cashier forms and pop-up sheets.

If an app has a theme choice of its own, it's usually under the profile or account icon, in a section called Settings, Preferences or App settings. Many apps don't offer one, and our facts files don't confirm a theme option for any of our partner apps, so check inside the app you use.

How to turn on dark mode on iPhone and iPad

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Display & Brightness.
  3. Under Appearance, choose Dark. Choose Automatic if you want it to follow sunset and sunrise, or tap Options to set your own times.
  4. For quick switching, open Control Centre by swiping down from the top-right corner, press and hold the brightness slider, then tap the Dark Mode button.
  5. Reopen the casino app. If its menus haven't changed, close it fully from the app switcher and open it again.

On iPad, the steps are the same, and the larger screen means lobby layouts are less likely to crowd at bigger text sizes. Our iPad casino apps page covers split-screen and tablet layouts.

Dark theme on Android: Samsung, Pixel and other phones

Android calls it dark theme, and the exact path depends on the brand. These are the usual routes:

PhoneWhere to find itQuick toggle
Google PixelSettings > Display > Dark themeQuick Settings tile: Dark theme
Samsung GalaxySettings > Display > Dark (Light/Dark choice at the top)Quick panel tile: Dark mode
OnePlus and OppoSettings > Display (& brightness) > Dark modeQuick Settings tile
MotorolaSettings > Display > Dark themeQuick Settings tile
XiaomiSettings > Display (& brightness) > Dark modeControl centre tile

Some Android phones also offer a forced dark option for apps that don't support it, either in developer options or the brand's own display settings. It can make casino lobbies look odd, with inverted logos or unreadable buttons, so turn it off if things look wrong. Brand-specific tips are on our pages for Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel.

What dark mode changes inside a casino app, and what it leaves alone

It helps to think of a casino app in layers. The app shell (tab bar, settings, login) is built by the operator and may follow your theme. Many lobbies and account pages are web content inside that shell, styled by the casino. Games are separate HTML5 products from studios such as Pragmatic Play or NetEnt, loaded from their own servers, and they always use their own artwork. Live dealer tables are video streams from a studio, so their colours come from the camera.

  • Usually follows your theme: keyboards, system alerts, Face ID or fingerprint prompts, Apple Pay and Google Pay sheets, share sheets, and notification banners.
  • Sometimes follows: the app's own settings screens, login forms and cashier pages.
  • Never follows: slot games, table games, live dealer streams and game help screens.

This layering also explains why one game can look crisp and another blurry on the same phone: each studio decides its own resolution and artwork. Our guide to casino app speed and performance explains how the layers affect loading times too.

Brightness, True Tone, Night Shift and eye comfort

Brightness affects your comfort and battery more than any theme. Auto-brightness on iPhone (Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Auto-Brightness) and Adaptive brightness on Android (Settings > Display) adjust to the room, which is usually the best default. In a dark room, a lower manual setting avoids the glare of bright slot animations.

Night Shift on iPhone, Night Light on Pixel and Eye comfort shield on Samsung warm the colours in the evening. They don't affect game outcomes, but they shift colours, so red and black roulette pockets or similar-coloured symbols can look a little different. True Tone on iPhone adjusts the white balance to the surrounding light; it's harmless for casino apps.

Text size and display zoom without breaking the layout

Larger text helps readability in menus and the cashier, but casino lobbies pack in a lot of tiles, and big text can cut off game names or push buttons off-screen. If that happens, step down one text size and use the phone's zoom gesture or magnifier when you need to read something small, such as the stake and balance bar at the bottom of a slot. More options for low vision are covered in our guide to casino app accessibility.

Display Zoom on iPhone and Screen zoom on Android enlarge everything, not just text. They're helpful on small-screen phones if you find buttons fiddly, though fewer games will fit on each screen of the lobby.

Rotation lock, portrait and landscape

Many modern slots run in portrait, with the reels stacked above a spin button you can reach with your thumb. Others, along with most live dealer tables, look better in landscape. Whether the game turns depends on two things: whether the game supports both orientations, and whether your phone's rotation lock is on.

  1. On iPhone, open Control Centre and tap the padlock-and-arrow icon to switch Portrait Orientation Lock on or off.
  2. On Android, pull down Quick Settings and tap Auto-rotate (or Portrait, depending on the brand).
  3. With rotation unlocked, turn the phone. If the game still doesn't rotate, it's built for one orientation only.
  4. If a game shows a message asking you to rotate, unlock rotation first, then turn the phone.

Display settings that save battery during casino sessions

The screen is usually the biggest drain on battery when you play. On phones with OLED displays (most recent iPhones and many Android phones), black pixels are switched off, so dark lobbies and dark mode do save some power. LCD screens, found on some budget Android phones and older iPhones, don't gain much from dark colours, because the backlight stays on.

  • Lower the brightness, or let auto-brightness handle it.
  • On Android phones with a 120Hz option, switching to 60Hz (often called Standard motion smoothness on Samsung) saves power at the cost of slightly less smooth scrolling.
  • Low Power Mode on iPhone and Battery Saver on Android reduce background activity and can cap refresh rates.
  • Live dealer streams use the screen and the network continuously, so they drain battery fastest.

Auto-Lock, screen timeout and the casino's session timeout

Your phone's Auto-Lock (Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock on iPhone) or Screen timeout (Settings > Display on Android) turns the screen off if you don't touch it. That doesn't log you out of the casino. Separately, casino apps have their own session timeout, which logs you out after a period of inactivity for security, and the length is set by the operator.

If the screen locks during a spin or a live hand, the result still settles on the server. When you unlock, the game either shows the result or resumes where you left off, and your balance reflects it. Check the game history if you're unsure what happened.

Frequently asked questions

Do casino apps have dark mode?

Most casino apps already use a dark design by default, so they look dark regardless of your phone's setting. Some follow the system theme in their own menus, login pages and cashier, and a few offer a theme option in settings. The games and live streams always keep their own colours. To switch the phone's theme, go to Settings > Display & Brightness on iPhone or Settings > Display on Android. If you're comparing apps on other features too, our guide to what makes a good casino app is a useful checklist.

Why doesn't my casino app change when I turn on dark mode?

Because the casino has fixed its own colours, and most of what you see is web content or game artwork that ignores the system theme. Dark mode normally changes only native elements such as keyboards, pop-up alerts, biometric prompts and payment sheets. If you expected the app's settings pages to change and they didn't, close the app fully and reopen it. Games will never follow the theme, because they're separate products loaded from each studio's servers. Our casino app speed and performance guide explains those layers.

Does dark mode save battery in casino apps?

On phones with OLED screens, yes, a little. OLED pixels showing black are switched off, so dark lobbies and menus use less power than bright ones. On LCD screens the saving is negligible because the backlight stays on. Brightness has a bigger effect than theme, and live dealer streams drain battery fastest because the screen and network are busy constantly. Lowering brightness, using Low Power Mode or Battery Saver, and closing the app when done all help. See do casino apps drain battery? for more.

How do I stop a casino game rotating on my phone?

Turn on rotation lock. On iPhone, open Control Centre and tap the Portrait Orientation Lock icon. On Android, pull down Quick Settings and turn off Auto-rotate, or select Portrait. The game will then stay upright. If a game is designed only for landscape, it may still show a message asking you to turn the phone; in that case, you'll need to unlock rotation to play it. Our guide to portrait vs landscape mobile slots explains which layouts suit which games.

Can I make the text bigger in a casino app?

Yes, through your phone's text size setting, which most casino app menus and account pages follow. On iPhone, use Settings > Display & Brightness > Text Size, or the Accessibility menu for larger sizes; on Android, Settings > Display > Font size. Games generally don't scale their text, so use the zoom gesture or a magnifier for the stake and balance bar. If lobby tiles start overlapping, reduce the size by a step. More options are in our guide to casino app accessibility.

Will my casino app log me out when the screen locks?

Not just because the screen locks. Phone Auto-Lock only turns the display off. The casino app logs you out after its own session timeout, set by the operator, which may be longer or shorter than your screen timeout. If a spin or hand was in progress, the result is settled on the server, and you'll see it when you return. Face ID or fingerprint login makes logging back in quick. See the session timeout glossary entry for how operators use timeouts.

Why does my slot look blurry on my phone?

Each game studio sets its own artwork and resolution, so older games or those designed mainly for desktop can look soft on a high-resolution phone screen. A partially loaded or cached version can also look blurry. Try closing the game and reopening it, check your connection, and clear the app's cache if the problem persists. If every game looks blurry, a display zoom setting may be scaling things up. Our casino app troubleshooting guide covers cache clearing on iPhone and Android.

Does Night Shift or blue light filter affect casino games?

It changes how colours look, not how games work. Night Shift on iPhone, Night Light on Pixel and Eye comfort shield on Samsung add a warm tint, which can make reds look orange and some similar symbols harder to tell apart. Results are decided on the game server and aren't affected. If you're struggling to distinguish colours, turn the filter off or rely on numbers and symbol shapes, as described in our guide to casino app accessibility. Evening play is also a good time to set a reality check.
