Casino app jargon for beginners is easier to learn in the order you meet it than from an A–Z list. This guide follows a new player’s path through an app, from the store listing and sign-up to the cashier, game lobby, slot screen, bonus terms and safer gambling menu, and explains each term in plain English with pound examples.
Most jargon clusters on a few screens: sign-up, cashier, game lobby, bonus terms and safer gambling.
RTP and volatility describe a game over millions of spins, not what happens in your session.
Wagering means how much you must stake before bonus money can be withdrawn; UK offers are capped at 10x.
Deposit limits, time-outs and reality checks are tools you control, not penalties.

Casino app glossary
Casino app jargon for beginners, in the order you meet it
Casino apps borrow words from slot design, banking, regulation and marketing, often on the same screen. Rather than learning them alphabetically, it helps to know where each one turns up. Each section below follows one stage of using an app and has a short table, with links to fuller definitions in our casino app glossary and the separate glossary A–Z.
Gambling in an app is entertainment that costs money. Understanding the words won’t change the odds, but it will help you see exactly what you are agreeing to.
Words on the App Store and Google Play listing
Term
What it means
Where you see it
Developer or seller
The company that publishes the app; it should match the casino’s licence holder or its group
Under the app name
Age rating
18+ on the App Store, PEGI 18 on Google Play for real-money casino apps
Information section
Native app
An app built for iOS or Android and installed from a store
Store listing, compared with a mobile site
APK
An Android install file; casino APKs from websites skip Google Play’s checks
Websites offering downloads
Privacy label or data safety
What data the app collects and shares
App Privacy on iPhone, Data safety on Android
Coral’s iPhone app, for example, lists Entain as seller with copyright to LC International Limited, the company named on its UK licence. More on these checks in how to read casino app store listings, and the APK and native app entries.
Sign-up and verification terms
Sign-up screens use regulatory language because the casino has to know who you are before you can play, even in demo mode.
KYC (know your customer): the identity, age and address checks every UK casino must carry out. Usually automatic, sometimes with a photo of your ID. See KYC.
Verification: the app’s word for those checks being complete. Until then, you can’t deposit or play.
Opt-in: a tick box or button you must use to join a bonus. Without it, an offer may not apply.
Marketing preferences: whether the casino can email, text or send push notifications about offers.
Biometric login: Face ID or fingerprint sign-in instead of typing a password.
Cashier jargon: deposits, withdrawals and limits
Term
Plain-English meaning
Example
Minimum deposit
The smallest payment the cashier accepts
Casumo publishes £10 for all methods
Pending
A withdrawal waiting for the casino to approve it
Shown as Pending or Processing in the history
Closed loop
Withdrawals go back to the method you deposited with
A card deposit is paid back to that card
E-wallet
An account such as PayPal or Skrill that sits between your bank and the casino
Often excluded from welcome offers
Open banking or Pay by Bank
Paying directly from your bank account, approved in your banking app
No card number entered
Withdrawal fee
A charge for taking money out, where one exists
Casumo charges £3 on withdrawals under £10
Two rules sit behind the cashier: credit cards can’t be used to gamble in Great Britain, and a withdrawal request can’t be reversed to keep playing. The minimum deposit, pending period and closed-loop payments entries go deeper.
Game lobby words: from RTP to live dealer
The lobby is where most descriptive jargon lives, in filters, game tiles and info buttons.
RTP (return to player): the share of stakes a game pays back over a very long run. A 96% RTP means £96 back per £100 staked across millions of spins, not in your session. Many slots have several RTP versions, and the game’s help screen shows the one in use. See RTP.
House edge: the flip side of RTP; 100% minus 96% leaves a 4% edge.
Volatility: how a game spreads its returns. Low volatility pays small amounts often; high volatility pays rarely but can pay more. See volatility.
Jackpot and progressive jackpot: a large top prize, which in a progressive game grows as people play across many casinos.
Live dealer: a real presenter streamed to your phone, dealing cards or spinning a wheel.
Game show: a live game built around a money wheel or board, with bonus rounds.
Slot screen jargon in portrait and landscape
Once a slot is open, the buttons and info pages have their own vocabulary. In portrait mode, the paytable and settings are often hidden behind a menu or i icon.
Term
What it does
Pound example
Stake or bet
The total cost of one spin
20p per spin × 100 spins = £20 played
Coin value
Older slots split the stake into coins per line
1p coin × 20 lines = 20p spin
Paylines or ways to win
The patterns that count as a win
20 fixed lines, or 243 ways
Wild and scatter
A wild substitutes for symbols; scatters often trigger free spins
Three scatters may start a feature
Free spins (in-game)
Bonus spins triggered inside a slot at your current stake
Not the same as promotional spins
Max win
The largest possible payout, often as a multiple of stake
5,000x on a 10p spin is £500
UK slots have no autoplay or turbo, each spin lasts at least 2.5 seconds, and bonus buy features aren’t offered in Great Britain. Your net position, the running total of wins minus stakes for the session, is always shown. More in mobile slot features explained, how to read a paytable on mobile and the net position entry.
Bonus terms, decoded with real numbers
Bonus terms pack the most jargon into the smallest space. Here is how to read them, using real offers.
Find the qualifying action: a minimum deposit, a stake on slots, or both. Coral asks you to deposit and bet £10 or more on slots for 100 free spins.
Check the spin value and game list. Coral’s spins are 10p each on selected games, so 100 × 10p is £10 of spins.
Look for wagering. Coral’s spin winnings have no wagering, so they are paid as cash. Casumo’s 50% match bonus up to £100 must be wagered 10x: a £100 bonus means £1,000 of stakes.
Note the expiry. Coral’s spins must be accepted within 48 hours and used within 7 days; Casumo’s wagering must be done within 7 days.
Read the max bet rule: Casumo allows no more than £5 per bet while the bonus is active.
Check payment exclusions. Coral’s offer excludes PayPal, Neteller, Skrill, Paysafe, prepaid cards and certain debit cards.
These tools sit in every UK casino app, usually under Safer Gambling in the account menu.
Deposit limit: a cap you set on how much you can pay in per day, week or month. Lowering it is instant; raising it takes at least 24 hours plus your confirmation.
Reality check: a pop-up showing how long you have been playing.
Time-out: a break from 24 hours up to six weeks.
Self-exclusion: a block of at least six months with one operator.
GAMSTOP: the free national scheme that blocks you from every online operator licensed in Great Britain.
Cooling-off period: the wait before a loosened control, such as a higher limit, takes effect.
The reality check entry and our guide to cooling-off periods on casino apps explain two of the most misunderstood. If gambling stops feeling like entertainment, the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133 is free and open 24 hours a day.
Easily confused pairs
A few pairs of terms trip up almost everyone at first.
Free spins from a promotion vs free spins inside a slot: promotional spins come from the casino with terms; in-game spins are a slot feature paid for by your stake.
Time-out vs session timeout: one is a gambling break you choose, the other a security sign-out after inactivity.
RTP vs hit frequency: RTP is how much comes back overall; hit frequency is how often any win lands.
Gross vs net deposit limit: gross counts every deposit; net subtracts withdrawals.
Demo mode vs no-deposit bonus: demo play uses pretend credits after age verification; a no-deposit bonus is a real-money offer, and none of our partners offers one.
Putting the jargon to work on real offers
Our partner offers are a good way to practise reading terms. PlayOJO gives new UK customers (excluding Northern Ireland) 80 free spins on Big Bass Bonanza at 10p each with a first deposit of £10 or more, with no wagering, so winnings are paid in cash. Coral and Casumo’s offers are decoded step by step above. 18+, terms apply.
Each of these offers uses the jargon above in its terms: PlayOJO’s spins have no wagering, Coral’s spins need a £10 slot bet, and Casumo’s match bonus carries 10x wagering. 18+, terms apply.

Frequently asked questions
What does RTP mean in a casino app?
RTP, or return to player, is the percentage of all stakes a game pays back over a very long run. A slot with 96% RTP returns £96 per £100 staked across millions of spins, which leaves a 4% house edge. It says nothing reliable about a single session, where results swing widely. Many slots come in several RTP versions, so check the game’s help screen for the figure in use. See how to find a slot’s RTP in an app.
What does wagering mean on a casino bonus?
Wagering is how much you must stake before bonus money, or winnings from it, can be withdrawn. It is shown as a multiple: a £20 bonus with 10x wagering needs £200 of stakes. Since 19 January 2026, UK casino bonuses can’t require more than 10x. No-wagering offers pay winnings straight to your cash balance. Different games can count at different rates towards wagering. The wagering requirement entry explains more.
What is the difference between volatility and RTP?
RTP is how much a game pays back overall; volatility is how unevenly it pays. Two slots can both have 96% RTP, but a low-volatility one pays small wins often while a high-volatility one goes long stretches without much and occasionally pays larger amounts. High volatility means bigger swings in a short session, so a budget can run out faster. Neither changes the house edge. See volatility for examples.
What does pending mean on a casino withdrawal?
Pending means the casino hasn’t yet approved your withdrawal. During this time it may check your identity, bonus terms or payment details. Once approved, the money is sent, and how long it takes to arrive depends on the method. Coral and Ladbrokes, for example, say Visa Fast Funds payouts typically arrive within about four hours of approval. You can’t reverse a withdrawal to keep playing. The help page on a casino app withdrawal pending explains common causes of delay.
What is KYC and why does a casino app need it?
KYC stands for know your customer: the checks a casino must make on your identity, age and address. UK-licensed casinos have to verify you before you can deposit or play, including free demo games. Most checks happen automatically using your details, but the app may ask for a photo of your ID or a proof of address. It protects against underage gambling, fraud and money laundering. See casino app verification.
Are free spins really free?
Not in the sense of costing nothing. Promotional free spins come with conditions, usually a qualifying deposit or stake. Coral’s 100 free spins, for example, need you to deposit and bet £10 or more on slots, and PlayOJO’s 80 spins need a first deposit of at least £10. The spins themselves have a fixed value, often 10p each, and an expiry date. 18+, terms apply. The free spins glossary entry explains the different kinds.
What is a max bet rule?
A max bet rule caps how much you can stake per spin or hand while a bonus is active. Casumo, for example, allows no more than £5 per bet with an active bonus. Breaking the rule can lead to bonus winnings being removed, so check it before playing. It sits alongside the legal slot stake limits of £5 per spin for players aged 25 and over and £2 for 18 to 24-year-olds. See max bet rules on casino apps.
What is the difference between a time-out and self-exclusion?
Length and purpose. A time-out is a short break, from 24 hours up to six weeks, useful for a pause. Self-exclusion lasts at least six months and is designed for stepping away from gambling with that operator; it can’t be ended early. GAMSTOP extends self-exclusion to every online operator licensed in Great Britain. Both are found in the app’s safer gambling menu. The guide to account closure vs self-exclusion compares the options.
Where can I find a full list of casino app terms?
Our casino app glossary covers the most common terms in one page, and the glossary A–Z has a separate entry for each, from APK to wagering requirement. Inside an app, the help centre and each game’s info screen explain terms specific to that casino or game. If a bonus term is unclear, ask live chat before you opt in. The casino apps for beginners guide is a good next step.
