Max bet rules on casino apps limit how much you can stake on a single spin, hand or round while a bonus is active, and going over can cost you the bonus and anything won with it. They sit on top of the UK’s legal slot stake limits, so on a phone you are juggling two ceilings at once. This guide explains both and how to stay inside them.
A bonus max bet is a contract term set by the casino; the £5 (25+) and £2 (18–24) slot limits are legal rules set by the Gambling Commission.
Whichever ceiling is lower is the one that matters for you on any given spin.
Breaking a max bet rule usually lets the casino remove the bonus and winnings made with it, so check the figure before you tap Spin.
Casumo’s welcome bonus carries a £5 per bet cap while it is active; no-wagering spins at a fixed 10p have no max bet to worry about.

What max bet rules on casino apps actually do
A max bet rule is a line in a bonus’s terms that caps the stake you may place while bonus funds are in your account or while you are still working through wagering requirements. A typical wording reads something like ‘maximum stake £5 per spin or round while a bonus is active’. The cap exists because a matched bonus is the casino’s money: without a limit, someone could put the whole bonus on one high-stake spin, and either lose it instantly or clear the wagering in a handful of rounds.
The rule applies to stakes, not to winnings. If you stake £2 and win £400, nothing is broken. The question is only what you put down on each spin or hand. It also normally applies to the combined stake on one round, so three £2 roulette chips on different numbers count as a £6 round, not three separate £2 bets.
Once the bonus is cleared, forfeited or expired, the max bet rule falls away and only the legal limits and any deposit limit you have set remain. The definition in brief is also in our glossary entry for the max bet rule.
Bonus max bet versus the UK legal slot stake limit
Since 2025, online slots in Great Britain have had a legal stake ceiling that no casino can override. Players aged 25 and over can stake up to £5 a spin (from 9 April 2025), and players aged 18 to 24 up to £2 a spin (from 21 May 2025). The app knows your age from verification and greys out higher stakes automatically. A bonus max bet is a separate, contractual cap. When both apply, the lower one wins.

The last row matters. The £5 and £2 limits cover online slots, not roulette or blackjack, so on table and live games the bonus max bet may be the only stake cap in play. Many bonuses exclude table games or give them a low game weighting, but where they are allowed, the max bet still counts. Our page on UK stake limits on mobile slots covers the legal side in more depth.
How the stake is measured on slots, tables and live games
Most breaches are accidental, and they usually happen because the stake on screen is not the stake the casino measures. A few patterns to know:
Line slots: the total bet is the coin value multiplied by lines and coins per line. Some older games show coin value large and total bet small, so read the ‘Total bet’ or ‘Bet’ figure, not the coin.
Ante bets: an optional ante or ‘bet multiplier’ raises the cost of each spin by a fixed percentage shown in the paytable. A £4 base bet with a 25% ante is a £5 spin. Read more on the ante bet.
Roulette: every chip on the layout for that spin adds up. Racetrack and neighbour bets place several chips at once.
Blackjack: doubling and splitting add to the round’s stake after the deal, and side bets count too. A £3 hand doubled is £6.
Live game shows: stakes across several segments of the wheel are one round. Five £1 chips is a £5 round.
If a term says ‘per bet’ rather than ‘per round’, ask live chat which it means before you play table games with a bonus. Get the answer in writing in the chat transcript.
What happens if you bet over the max on a bonus
Bonus terms usually give the casino the right to remove the bonus and any winnings that came from it if the max bet is exceeded. Your own deposited cash is yours and should not be taken, but anything earned while the bonus was active may be. Some apps simply stop you: the stake selector will not go above the cap while a bonus is live. Others leave it to you, and the check happens later, often when you request a withdrawal.
A worked example shows why it hurts. Say you deposit £100, receive a £50 bonus with a £5 max bet, and play a slot at £4 a spin. Partway through, you raise the stake to £8 for a few spins and land a £300 win. When you ask to withdraw, the review finds the £8 spins. The terms allow the casino to remove the £50 bonus and the winnings generated with it, which may leave you with much less than the balance showed. A withdrawal that sits pending while bonus play is reviewed is a common sign this is happening.
Since 19 January 2026, the Gambling Commission’s reworded bonus rules expect terms to be clear before you sign up, and a casino cannot rely on a rule it never made visible. If you think a term was hidden or applied unfairly, ask for a final response from the operator and then take it to the casino’s independent ADR service, as explained in how to complain about a casino app.
Finding the max bet figure inside the app
The cap is almost never on the offer banner. It sits in the full terms. On most apps the route looks like this:
Open the app and tap Promotions, Offers or the gift icon, usually in the bottom navigation bar or the side menu.
Tap the offer you have opted into, then tap ‘Terms’, ‘Full T&Cs’ or the small ‘i’ icon. On some apps this opens a web page inside the app.
Use the in-page search on iPhone (the share icon, then Find on Page) or the three-dot menu on Android (Find in page) and search for ‘max’, ‘stake’ or ‘bet’.
Note the figure and whether it is per spin, per bet or per round.
Check your account’s bonus area (often under My Account, Bonuses) to see whether the bonus is still active, because the cap only applies while it is.
Setting a stake on a phone without tipping over the cap
Phone slot interfaces compress the bet controls. In portrait, the stake is often a small figure beside the spin button, with plus and minus arrows or a pop-up ladder of preset stakes. Tapping the plus arrow twice instead of once is an easy slip, especially with a thumb near the bottom of a large screen. A few habits help:
Set the stake before the session, then leave the bet panel closed. Most slots remember your last stake for that game.
Avoid any ‘Max Bet’ shortcut button while a bonus is active. It jumps to the game’s top stake, and the app’s legal limit may still be above your bonus cap.
Turn off ante or bet-multiplier toggles unless you have done the sum.
On table games, use ‘Rebet’ only when you are sure the previous round was under the cap, and avoid ‘Double’ buttons on the chip rack.
If your phone has a large display, play in the orientation where the bet figure is easiest to read; our guide to portrait vs landscape mobile slots explains where controls usually sit.
Max bet and wagering maths: how many spins a bonus takes
The max bet also controls how fast you can clear wagering. With the 10x cap that has applied since 19 January 2026, a £25 bonus needs £250 of qualifying stakes. UK slot rules set a minimum of 2.5 seconds per spin, so the number of spins sets a floor on how long it takes.

Two points come out of this. First, the average cost is the same whatever stake you choose, because the house edge applies to every pound wagered: 4% of £250 is £10. Second, larger stakes swing your balance harder, so you are more likely to bust the balance early or hit a large win early. Neither outcome is predictable. Real times will be longer than the table because of features, loading and pauses. Losses are the likely result over time, so treat any bonus as extra play, not a way to make money.
How max bet rules apply to the partner offers
Of the five licensed apps we work with, only the matched bonuses involve a max bet question. The free spins offers come at a fixed 10p stake set by the casino, so you cannot change the bet.

For a player aged 18 to 24, Casumo’s £5 cap is never the binding limit on slots, because the legal £2 ceiling is lower. For someone 25 or over, the two match at £5 on slots. The Casumo app welcome offer and 10bet app welcome offer pages set out the full terms.

Frequently asked questions
What is a max bet rule on a casino app?
A max bet rule is a bonus term that caps how much you can stake on one spin, hand or round while bonus money is active. It is set by the casino, not by law, and it usually appears in the full terms rather than on the offer banner. Typical caps are a few pounds per spin. The rule ends once the bonus is cleared, expires or is forfeited. Our casino app bonus terms page explains how it fits with the other conditions.
Is the max bet the same as the UK £5 slot limit?
No, they are separate. The £5 per spin limit for players aged 25 and over, and £2 for players aged 18 to 24, are legal rules set by the Gambling Commission and apply to all online slots in Great Britain. A bonus max bet is a contract term that only applies while a bonus is active. When both apply, the lower figure is the real ceiling. See casino app maximum stake for how the legal limits show up in an app.
What happens if I accidentally bet over the max bet?
The casino can usually remove the bonus and any winnings made with it, as set out in its terms. Your own deposited money should not be taken. Some apps prevent the breach by blocking higher stakes while a bonus is active; others check later, often at withdrawal. If you spot a mistake, tell live chat at once and ask how it will be handled. If you disagree with the outcome, follow the steps in how to complain about a casino app.
Does the max bet apply to free spins?
Usually not in a way you can break, because welcome free spins come at a fixed stake chosen by the casino, such as 10p a spin. You cannot raise it. A max bet could matter if free spin winnings were paid as bonus money with wagering, because you would then be playing that bonus balance at your own chosen stake. With no-wagering spins, winnings are not bonus money, so no cap applies to them. Read more in no wagering free spins apps.
Does a max bet count per spin or per round on roulette?
It depends on the wording, but most terms mean the total stake on one round. Five £1 chips on different numbers make a £5 round. Some terms say ‘per bet’, which can be read either way, so ask support and keep the chat transcript. Table games also tend to have low game weighting or be excluded from bonus play, so check that first. Our guide to how to play roulette on mobile explains how the chip rack works on a phone.
Does Casumo have a max bet on its welcome bonus?
Yes. Casumo’s published terms set a maximum of £5 per bet while the bonus is active. The offer itself is a 50% bonus up to £100 on a first deposit of at least £20, for new customers aged 18 and over who opt in, with the bonus wagered 10x within 7 days. Game, play and payment restrictions apply. On slots, a player aged 18 to 24 is held to the lower legal £2 limit anyway. Full details are on the Casumo app welcome offer page.
Can I raise my stake once the bonus is cleared?
Yes. When wagering is complete and the bonus has converted to cash, or when you have forfeited it, the max bet rule no longer applies. You are then limited only by the legal slot limits and any limits you have set yourself. Check the bonus area of your account to confirm the bonus is no longer listed as active before changing your stake. If you are unsure how far through the wagering you are, see how to track wagering in an app.
Why do casinos set a max bet on bonuses?
Casinos set a max bet to stop a bonus being cleared or lost in one or two very large stakes. Without a cap, a player could bet the whole bonus on a single spin and, if it won, meet the wagering in a few rounds. The cap spreads play over more spins, which keeps the house edge working as designed. From your side, it means smaller swings and a longer session, so it is worth setting a session limit or reality check alongside it.
Where is the max bet shown in a casino app?
It is shown in the bonus’s full terms, which you reach from the Promotions or Offers screen by tapping the offer and then Terms or the info icon. Some apps also show it in the active bonus panel under My Account. Use Find on Page on iPhone or Find in page on Android to search for ‘max’ or ‘stake’. The figure is rarely on the banner itself. Our casino app terms and conditions guide explains how to read the rest.
