Free spins vs matched bonus apps

Free spins vs matched bonus apps is a trade between certainty and size. Spins offers give a fixed number of spins at a set value, often with no wagering; matched bonuses add a percentage of your deposit as bonus money that must be wagered first. For deposits under about £50 spins usually win; above that, a match can be worth more if the wagering suits you.

Key takeaways

  • Spins are valued as count × spin value: 100 spins at 10p is £10 of spins.
  • A matched bonus is worth roughly the bonus minus the expected cost of wagering it.
  • Three of our partners offer no-wagering spins (Coral, Ladbrokes, PlayOJO); two offer 10x matches (Casumo, 10bet). 18+, terms apply.
  • Since 19 January 2026, UK wagering is capped at 10x, which makes matched bonuses easier to judge.

Free spins vs matched bonus apps: the core difference

A free spins offer gives you a set number of spins on chosen slots at a fixed stake, usually after you deposit or bet a qualifying amount. What you win from those spins is either cash straight away (no wagering) or bonus money to play through. A matched bonus adds a percentage of your first deposit as bonus funds, for example 100% up to £25, which you can use across eligible games but must wager a set number of times before withdrawing.

Neither is a gift: both need a deposit, and slots return less than they take over time. Our free spins and matched deposit glossary entries define the terms.

How to value a free spins offer

Multiply the number of spins by the value of each spin. That gives the total amount staked on your behalf, which is the fairest headline figure. The expected return is that total multiplied by the slot’s RTP.

OfferSpins × valueSpin valueExpected return
PlayOJO80 × 10p£8about £7.68
Coral100 × 10p£10about £9.60
Ladbrokes (all 10 days)500 × 10p£50about £48
Ladbrokes (4 of 10 days)200 × 10p£20about £19.20

Expected return is an average over many players; your own spins might return nothing or several times more. Spins on a high-volatility slot such as Big Bass Bonanza swing more than on a low-volatility one. Because our partners’ spins have no wagering, whatever you win is cash.

How to value a matched bonus

Start with the bonus amount, then subtract the expected cost of the wagering: total wagering × house edge. At a 96% RTP the edge is 4%.

Offer and depositBonusWagering (10x)Expected costRough value if completed
10bet, £25 deposit£25£250 in 3 days£10about £15
Casumo, £50 deposit£25£250 in 7 days£10about £15
Casumo, £100 deposit£50£500 in 7 days£20about £30
Casumo, £200 deposit£100£1,000 in 7 days£40about £60

These figures assume you finish the wagering. Many players don’t, because a losing run empties the balance first, and the deposit itself is at risk throughout. Real value is therefore lower and much less predictable than the table suggests. Our wagering requirements guide explains the calculation in more depth.

Ladbrokes’ figure assumes you claim every day; if you don’t, scale it down. At high deposits a Casumo match can be worth more on average, but only if you are comfortable staking £1,000 in a week at no more than £5 a bet, and only if £200 was already your planned budget. Never deposit more to reach a bigger bonus.

Hidden costs: deadlines, max bets and exclusions

  • Deadlines: Coral’s spins must be accepted within 48 hours and used in 7 days; Ladbrokes’ must be claimed daily by 23:59; 10bet allows 3 days to wager and Casumo 7.
  • Max bet: Casumo caps bets at £5 with an active bonus; breaking it can void winnings.
  • Win caps: 10bet limits bonus winnings to £1,000.
  • Game limits: spins are tied to selected slots; 10bet wagering counts slots only; Casumo applies game restrictions.
  • Payment exclusions: Coral and Ladbrokes exclude e-wallets and prepaid cards from their spins offers.

Our guide to casino app bonus terms explains each clause and where to find it in an app.

How spins and matched bonuses appear inside an app

Spins usually show up as a counter on the eligible game’s tile, a pop-up when you open the game, or a message in the app’s inbox; Ladbrokes uses the inbox for its daily batches. Bonus funds from a match normally appear as a separate bonus balance with a wagering progress bar in the account or promotions area.

  1. Before depositing, open the promotions page in the app and read the offer’s terms in full.
  2. Opt in if required (Casumo) or choose the casino bonus at sign-up (10bet).
  3. Deposit with an eligible payment method and, for spins offers, place the qualifying slots bet.
  4. For spins, open the inbox or the named game; for a match, check the bonus balance has appeared.
  5. Track wagering progress in the account area and note the expiry date.

If nothing appears, see free spins not showing or our guide to tracking wagering in an app.

How the 2026 UK rules changed both offer types

From 19 January 2026, wagering on any UK casino bonus is capped at 10x, and promotions that mix gambling products, such as a sports bet unlocking casino spins, are banned. Before the cap, matched bonuses with 35x or higher wagering were common and much harder to complete; at 10x, the gap between spins and matches is narrower. Online slot stakes are also limited to £5 a spin for players aged 25 and over and £2 for 18 to 24-year-olds, which limits how quickly matched-bonus wagering can be cleared. Our UK casino app rule changes 2026 guide has the full list.

Choosing between spins and a match

  • First-timers and small budgets: free spins with no wagering. Our casino apps for beginners guide explains the first steps.
  • Players who want to try many slots: matched bonus funds give a balance you can spread around, within the rules.
  • Players short on time: a one-off spins offer such as PlayOJO’s or Coral’s.
  • Players depositing £100+ anyway: a Casumo match may be worth more on average, if the wagering suits you.
  • Anyone who dislikes rules: stick to no wagering free spins apps.

Set a deposit limit before claiming any offer, and treat it as a way to try an app, not to make money. See all head-to-heads on the compare hub.

Frequently asked questions

Are free spins or a matched bonus better?

For most deposits under £50, free spins are better value at our partners, because they carry no wagering and their value doesn’t depend on deposit size. Ladbrokes gives up to 500 spins at 10p after £10 on slots, worth up to £50. At higher deposits a match can be worth more, such as Casumo’s 50% up to £100, but it must be wagered 10x before withdrawal. Our casino app welcome bonus page compares formats in more detail. 18+, terms apply.

How do I work out what free spins are worth?

Multiply the number of spins by the value of each spin. For example, 100 spins at 10p equals £10 of spins, and 80 at 10p equals £8. To estimate the average return, multiply that by the slot’s RTP: at 96%, £10 of spins returns about £9.60 on average, although individual results vary hugely. Check whether winnings are paid as cash or need wagering, as that changes the value. Our 100 free spins apps page works through more examples.

How do I work out what a matched bonus is worth?

Take the bonus amount and subtract the expected cost of the wagering, which is the total you must stake multiplied by the house edge. A £25 bonus with 10x wagering needs £250 of stakes; at a 96% RTP that costs about £10 on average, leaving roughly £15 if you finish. Many players don’t finish because a losing run ends the balance first, so real value is lower. Our low wagering casino apps page explains why lower multiples help.

Which partner apps offer free spins with no wagering?

Three of our partners do. Coral gives 100 spins at 10p after you bet £10 on slots; Ladbrokes gives 50 spins a day for ten days, up to 500 at 10p, after you spend £10 on slots; and PlayOJO gives 80 spins on Big Bass Bonanza at 10p with a first deposit of £10 or more. Winnings from all three carry no wagering. Payment and regional exclusions apply. See casino app free spins for full terms. 18+, terms apply.

Can I use a matched bonus on live casino or table games?

Sometimes, but often only in part. 10bet’s casino welcome bonus must be wagered on slots, so other games don’t count. Casumo’s welcome bonus has game and play restrictions, and its terms explain which games contribute and how much. Live and table games are commonly excluded or weighted low because their house edges are lower. Always check the contribution list before using bonus funds outside slots. Our game weighting in casino apps guide explains how weightings work.

Why are free spins always 10p each?

Our partners’ spins offers are all set at 10p a spin, which keeps the cost of the promotion predictable for the operator and means the total value is easy to calculate. You can’t raise the stake on bonus spins. A low spin value also keeps each spin well inside the £2 and £5 legal slot stake limits. With a matched bonus you choose your stake, within any max bet rule. Our coin value entry explains how slot stakes are built.

Did the 10x wagering cap make matched bonuses better?

Yes, in the sense that they became easier to complete and to value. Since 19 January 2026, no UK casino bonus can require more than 10x wagering. Under older terms, a £100 bonus at 35x needed £3,500 of stakes; at 10x it needs £1,000, cutting the expected cost of wagering considerably. No-wagering spins remain simpler, because they have nothing to complete at all. Our 10x wagering casino apps page explains the change in detail.

Can I claim both a free spins offer and a matched bonus?

Not at the same casino, as each partner has one welcome offer per new customer. You can claim different offers at different casinos, for example spins at Coral and a match at Casumo, because they are separate companies. Coral and Ladbrokes share an operator, so check each brand’s eligibility terms. Holding several accounts makes spending harder to track, so set a limit in each. Our can you have more than one casino app page explains the practical points.
