Cluster pays is a slot system that pays for groups of matching symbols touching each other horizontally or vertically anywhere on the grid, usually five or more, instead of along reels or paylines. Bigger clusters pay more, and most cluster games remove winning groups so new symbols can fall in.
A cluster is a group of matching symbols joined edge to edge; diagonals usually don’t count.
Most games need at least five symbols; bigger clusters move up the paytable.
Scatter pays is different: matching symbols count anywhere, touching or not.
Square grids such as 7×7 and 8×8 fit a phone held upright well.

What cluster pays means
On a cluster pays slot there are no lines and no left-to-right rule. After each drop of symbols, the game looks for groups of the same symbol where each one touches another on a side, above or below. If a group reaches the minimum size, usually five, it pays according to how many symbols it contains.
Clusters can snake across the grid in any shape, an L, a zigzag or a solid block, as long as every symbol connects edge to edge. Diagonal contact doesn’t normally count. Wild symbols can join clusters, sometimes linking two groups into one bigger win.
Cluster pays vs scatter pays vs ways
Lobbies sometimes lump these together, but they pay differently.
Grid sizes vary: Reactoonz, Sugar Rush and Fruit Party use 7×7 grids, while Jammin’ Jars, its sequel Jammin’ Jars 2 and Gems Bonanza use 8×8.
How cluster size affects the payout
Cluster paytables list each symbol with prices for a range of sizes, often 5, 6, 7 and so on up to 15 or more. The jump between sizes is steep near the top. As an illustration, a low-value symbol might pay 0.1x the stake for a cluster of 5 and several times the stake for 15 or more. At a 50p stake, the first is 5p, a return well under the stake, which UK rules forbid games from celebrating as a win.
Because removed clusters let new symbols fall in, one paid spin can contain several clusters in sequence. This chain is the cascading reels mechanic, and it is where most cluster games build their features, often with multipliers that grow on spots where wins have landed.
Cluster games are mostly high volatility. Reactoonz, Jammin’ Jars, Sugar Rush and Gems Bonanza are all rated high by their developers, so sessions can include long quiet stretches. See volatility.
Playing cluster pays slots on a phone
Square grids suit tall phone screens, and many cluster games are designed to be played upright with controls at the bottom within thumb reach. With 49 or 64 symbols on show, each is small, so animations highlight clusters with outlines or glows before they explode.
Open the slot and choose your stake with the plus and minus buttons or the stake panel.
Tap spin once per round; autoplay is not available in Great Britain and each spin lasts at least 2.5 seconds.
Watch the outlined groups: each highlighted cluster pays, then is removed.
Let the cascade finish; the win for the whole spin is shown at the end.
Check the paytable from the info icon to see the payout for each cluster size.
Hit frequency describes how often any cluster forms. Max win is the cap on a single spin, 20,000x on Jammin’ Jars and 5,000x on Sugar Rush by their published figures. RTP sets the long-run return. The full list is in our casino app glossary.

Frequently asked questions
How does cluster pays work?
Cluster pays rewards groups of matching symbols that touch each other horizontally or vertically anywhere on the grid. Most games need at least five symbols in a group, and bigger groups pay more according to the paytable. Winning clusters usually disappear and new symbols drop into the gaps, which can form fresh clusters in the same paid spin. There are no paylines and no need to start from the left. Reactoonz and Sugar Rush are well-known examples. See cascading reels for the drop-in mechanic.
Do diagonal symbols count in cluster pays?
In most cluster pays slots, no. Symbols need to share a side, meaning they touch above, below, left or right, to belong to the same cluster. Two matching symbols that only meet at a corner are treated as separate. A few games have their own rules, so the help screen is the place to check. Wild symbols can fill gaps and link groups, which can turn two small clusters into one larger one. The paytable guide shows where these rules sit on a phone.
What is the difference between cluster pays and scatter pays?
Cluster pays needs matching symbols to touch each other in a connected group. Scatter pays, used by games such as Sweet Bonanza and Gates of Olympus, counts matching symbols anywhere on the screen, so eight or more of the same symbol pay even if they are spread out. Both systems often use tumbling or cascading symbols after a win. The rules screen in each game states which system applies. Our Sweet Bonanza page explains the scatter pays version in detail.
Are cluster pays slots good for small budgets?
They can be played at low stakes, but most popular cluster games are rated high volatility, so returns can be uneven and a small balance may run out before a feature appears. The long-run return is set by RTP, not by the pay system. If you want steadier sessions, choose a lower stake and set a deposit limit before you start. Remember that losses are the likely outcome over time. Our guide to bankroll management on mobile suggests practical ways to plan a budget.
What is the minimum cluster size to win?
Five matching symbols is the most common minimum, used by games such as Reactoonz, Jammin’ Jars, Sugar Rush and Fruit Party. Some games set a different minimum, and a few symbols in particular games may pay from smaller groups, so always check the paytable inside the game. Clusters of five usually pay less than the stake, with the larger payouts reserved for big groups of 15 or more. The hit frequency page explains why small returns are common.
Can I play cluster pays slots on iPhone and Android?
Yes, cluster pays slots are built in HTML5 and run inside UK casino apps and mobile browsers on both iPhone and Android. Their square grids work well in portrait mode, with stake and spin buttons near the bottom of the screen. On compact phones, symbols can be small, so a larger screen or tablet can help. Demo play requires age verification in Great Britain. See iPhone casino apps and Android casino apps for device-specific guidance.
