How to play blackjack on mobile

How to play blackjack on mobile is simple once you know the buttons: place a chip in the betting circle, tap Deal, then choose Hit, Stand, Double or Split until your hand is finished. The aim is to finish closer to 21 than the dealer without going over. Below are the controls, the table rules worth checking and a strategy chart you can keep open on your phone.

Key takeaways

  • A blackjack (ace plus a ten-value card) should pay 3 to 2; avoid tables paying 6 to 5.
  • Basic strategy lowers the house edge but never removes it, so expect to lose over time.
  • Insurance and side bets carry a higher house edge than the main game.
  • UK rules mean no autoplay and at least 5 seconds per round on RNG blackjack.

How to play blackjack on mobile: your first hand

Blackjack is a game of choices, which makes it different from roulette or slots: after the deal, what you tap changes your chances. On a phone those choices appear as large buttons along the bottom of the screen, and they only light up when an action is allowed. The sequence below is the same in almost every RNG blackjack game in UK casino apps.

  1. Sign in to your casino app (Face ID or fingerprint if you have it switched on) and open the Table Games or Blackjack category.
  2. Tap the ‘i’ or menu icon and read the rules: number of decks, whether the dealer hits or stands on soft 17, and what blackjack pays.
  3. Pick a chip value from the rack, then tap the betting circle. Tap again to add more chips, or tap Undo to remove one.
  4. Tap Deal. You get two cards face up; the dealer gets one face up and one face down (or a single card, depending on the game).
  5. Choose an action: Hit for another card, Stand to keep your total, Double to double your stake and take exactly one more card, or Split if you hold a pair.
  6. When you stand or go over 21, the dealer reveals and draws to the house rule. Wins are added to your balance and the Rebet button appears.

If a button is greyed out, the move isn’t allowed in that situation. For example, many games only allow Double on your first two cards.

Card values and how a hand is scored

Number cards count at face value, jacks, queens and kings count as 10, and an ace counts as 1 or 11, whichever helps you more. Most mobile games show your running total in a bubble beside your cards, and when an ace is involved you will see two figures such as ‘7/17’. That is called a soft hand: you can take another card without any risk of going bust, because the ace can drop back to 1.

An ace and any ten-value card as your first two cards is a blackjack. It beats every other 21 and pays 3 to 2 on standard tables: a £10 bet returns £25 (your £10 plus £15). Going over 21 is a bust, and you lose immediately, even if the dealer later busts too. That one rule is where the house gets most of its advantage, because the player always acts first.

Hit, Stand, Double, Split: what each button does

ButtonWhat it doesExtra stakeTypical use
HitDeals you one more cardNoneLow totals, or 12–16 against a strong dealer card
StandEnds your turn with your current totalNone17 or more, or 13–16 against a weak dealer card

SplitTurns a pair into two separate handsEqual to your original betAlways aces and eights; never tens or fives
SurrenderGives up the hand and returns half your stakeNone (you lose half)Only offered on some tables

On a phone, the Double and Split buttons sit right next to Hit and Stand, and they cost more money. Take a moment before each tap. Some games also let you swipe or double tap the table as a gesture for Hit or Stand; if you find that too easy to trigger, look in the game settings for an option to switch gestures off.

Table rules to check before you sit down

Blackjack isn’t one game but a family of rule sets, and small differences change the house edge. The rules page (usually under ‘i’, ‘?’ or the hamburger menu) lists them. These are the ones that matter most:

RuleBetter for youWorse for you
Blackjack payout3 to 2 (£10 bet wins £15)6 to 5 (£10 bet wins £12)
Dealer on soft 17Dealer stands (S17)Dealer hits (H17)
DoublingDouble on any first two cardsDouble on 9–11 or 10–11 only
Double after splitAllowedNot allowed
SurrenderOfferedNot offered
Number of decksFewer decksMore decks

The game’s published RTP folds all these rules into one figure, assuming perfect play. With favourable rules and correct decisions, the house edge on standard blackjack is often quoted at around half a percent, which is low for a casino game, but it rises quickly with poor rules or guesswork. Read the RTP on the help screen rather than relying on a figure from elsewhere; our guide to best payout casino apps explains how RTP is shown.

A basic strategy chart you can keep on your phone

Basic strategy is the mathematically best decision for every combination of your hand and the dealer’s up-card. It cannot overturn the house edge; it simply wastes less money than playing on instinct. The simplified chart below suits most multi-deck games where the dealer stands on soft 17. Screenshot it, or keep it in your phone’s Notes app.

Your handDealer shows 2–6Dealer shows 7–Ace
Hard 8 or lessHitHit
Hard 9Double against 3–6, hit against 2Hit
Hard 10DoubleDouble against 7–9, hit against 10 or Ace
Hard 11DoubleDouble against 7–10, hit against Ace
Hard 12Stand against 4–6, hit against 2–3Hit
Hard 13–16StandHit
Hard 17+StandStand
Soft 13–17 (A+2 to A+6)Double: A+2 or A+3 against 5–6, A+4 or A+5 against 4–6, A+6 against 3–6; otherwise hitHit
Soft 18 (A+7)Double against 3–6, stand against 2Stand against 7–8, hit against 9–Ace
Soft 19+StandStand
Pair of aces or eightsSplitSplit
Pair of tens or fivesNever split (play 5+5 as hard 10)Never split

Where a chart says Double but the game won’t allow it, hit instead (or stand on soft 18). Some games show a ‘hint’ or ‘strategy’ button that highlights the recommended move; it’s worth using while you learn.

Insurance and side bets: the extra buttons on screen

When the dealer’s up-card is an ace, a pop-up offers insurance: a separate bet of up to half your stake that pays 2 to 1 if the dealer has blackjack. Because fewer than a third of the remaining cards are tens on average, insurance loses money over time for anyone not tracking cards, which in an RNG game shuffled every hand is impossible. Tapping ‘No’ is the usual basic strategy choice.

Many mobile tables also show small extra circles for side bets such as Perfect Pairs or 21+3. They can pay large multiples, but the published RTP for these bets is lower than for the main hand. If you play them, treat them as a separate, small part of your budget.

RNG blackjack vs live dealer blackjack on a phone

RNG blackjack is an animated game: a random number generator deals each card, the shoe is effectively shuffled every hand, and you play at your own pace within the 5-second minimum round time. It uses little data and suits short sessions on mobile data.

Live blackjack streams a real dealer from a studio. Seats are limited at classic tables, so you may see a ‘Bet Behind’ option that lets you stake on another player’s hand without controlling it. Larger ‘infinite’ tables give every player the same starting cards and let each choose their own moves. Decision timers run for every action, typically shown as a shrinking ring around the buttons, and if time runs out the game applies a default (usually Stand). That matters on a phone, where a notification or a dropped signal can eat into your time. Our live blackjack apps page and the guide to playing live casino on mobile cover these tables in depth.

Portrait, landscape and multi-hand layouts

Single-hand RNG blackjack works well in portrait: the dealer’s cards sit at the top, yours at the bottom and the buttons under your thumb. Multi-hand versions, where you play up to several boxes at once, need more width and usually look clearer in landscape. Live tables generally fill a landscape screen with video, while portrait views shrink the stream to the top half and stack controls below.

On a small phone, card totals and button labels can be cramped; increasing the display zoom setting rarely helps inside a game, but landscape usually does. The multi-hand blackjack apps page explains how stakes add up across boxes, and our small-screen phones guide covers compact handsets.

A worked hand, tap by tap

Say you stake £2 and are dealt 6 and 5 (hard 11). The dealer shows a 6. The chart says Double, so you tap Double: another £2 leaves your balance, making £4 at stake, and you receive one card, a 9, for 20. The dealer turns over a 10 for 16, must draw, and pulls an 8 to bust on 24. You are paid £4 profit, and your balance shows the £4 stake back plus £4 winnings. Had the dealer drawn a 5 for 21, you would have lost £4. The decision was correct either way; the outcome on any single hand is still down to the cards.

UK rules that apply to blackjack apps

Since 17 January 2025, Gambling Commission design rules have covered online table games as well as slots. RNG blackjack in a UK app has no autoplay, no turbo or quick-deal option, and each round must take at least 5 seconds. Your balance stays visible throughout. Practice or demo tables only open after age verification, and you can’t fund your account with a credit card. These rules are the same in every licensed app; our page on UK casino app rules summarises them.

Frequently asked questions

Is blackjack on a phone the same as in a real casino?

The rules and payouts are the same in principle, but RNG blackjack on a phone deals from a virtually reshuffled shoe every hand, while a real casino deals through a shoe until the cut card. Live dealer blackjack in an app is closest to the real thing, with physical cards filmed in a studio. Table rules such as soft 17 and the blackjack payout vary by game, so read the rules page each time. Our live blackjack apps page compares formats.

What does 3 to 2 mean in blackjack?

It means a natural blackjack wins £3 for every £2 you stake, so a £10 bet wins £15 and returns £25 in total. Some tables pay only 6 to 5, which turns that £15 into £12 and noticeably raises the house edge. The payout is printed on the table felt in most games and stated on the rules page. Choosing 3 to 2 tables is one of the simplest ways to keep the cost of play down. Our house edge entry explains why.

Can you count cards in a blackjack app?

No, card counting doesn’t work in RNG blackjack because the virtual shoe is effectively reshuffled before every hand, so past cards tell you nothing about the next one. Live dealer games use physical shoes, but they are usually cut deep and many use continuous or frequent shuffling, which removes most of the benefit. In any case, the games are designed so the house keeps its edge. Basic strategy is the realistic way to avoid wasting money; our basic strategy entry explains it.

Should I take insurance in mobile blackjack?

Basic strategy says no, because insurance pays 2 to 1 while the chance of the dealer holding a ten-value card under an ace is lower than one in three. Over time that makes insurance a losing side bet for most players. In RNG games with a fresh shuffle every hand, there is no way to gain an edge on it. Tap ‘No’ when the pop-up appears and keep your stake for the main hand. The glossary explains side bets and their published returns.

Why does my blackjack hand stand automatically?

In live blackjack, every decision has a timer, and if it runs out the game applies a default action, which is usually Stand. On a phone this often happens when a notification covers the screen or the stream buffers. Switch on Do Not Disturb, close other apps and play over Wi-Fi to reduce the risk. RNG blackjack waits for your tap, so this mainly affects live tables. Our guide to Wi-Fi vs mobile data helps with connection problems.

Is there a minimum time per hand on UK blackjack apps?

Yes, RNG blackjack and other non-slot casino games must take at least 5 seconds per round in Great Britain, under Gambling Commission rules that applied from 17 January 2025. The same rules removed autoplay and turbo options from these games. The minimum doesn’t mean the game rushes you: you can take as long as you like over each decision in RNG versions. It simply stops rounds being played back to back at high speed. See UK casino app rules for the full list.

Can I play blackjack for free on a casino app?

Some UK apps offer demo blackjack, but you must be 18 and verified before it opens, under rules in place since May 2019. Demo games use play credits rather than money, so wins and losses have no cash value. Not every table game has a demo version, and live dealer tables almost never do. Demo play is a useful way to learn the buttons and test a strategy chart without staking anything. Our page on demo mode verification explains the checks.

How much should I bet per hand in blackjack?

Bet an amount small enough that a run of losing hands won’t push you past what you set aside, because losing streaks are common even with perfect play. Many players size each stake as a small fraction of their session budget, so £2 hands on a £50 budget, for example. Remember that doubling and splitting can double or triple the money at stake on one hand. Set a deposit limit in the app first; our bankroll management on mobile guide shows how.
