Wisdom of Athena app: what you are opening

You won't find Wisdom of Athena as its own download. Pragmatic Play released it in 2023 for casino operators, and you reach it through the slots lobby of a licensed casino app. Search for Athena, tap the tile and the game loads inside the app using your normal casino balance.

The look is Greek myth with a calm palette: marble columns, an owl, a helmet and gemstones, with Athena beside the reels. Underneath, it belongs to the same family as Gates of Olympus: wins pay anywhere on the grid rather than along lines, symbols tumble away after a win, and the free spins round is all about multipliers. The extra twist is a locked row above the main grid.

The 6x5 grid and the locked top row on a phone

The main play area is 6 reels by 5 rows, with an extra row at the top that starts locked. Pragmatic's description says each tumble helps reveal more of the grid, so a run of tumbles gives the game more space to form wins. In the free spins round, the progress made towards unlocking carries over from spin to spin instead of resetting.

On a phone in portrait, the grid sits in the middle of the screen with Athena and the title above it and the controls below. With six columns, symbols are narrower than on a five-reel slot, but the gem and character icons are distinct enough to read on most phones. The locked row is shaded until it opens, which makes the progress easy to see at a glance.

How pay-anywhere wins work

There are no paylines. A win happens when at least eight of the same symbol land anywhere on the grid at once. The more matching symbols, the higher the payout band, and the paytable shows each band in pounds at your current stake.

An illustration: on a 50p spin, nine owl symbols scattered across the grid would pay whatever the paytable lists for the 8–9 band, with no need for them to touch or sit on a line. 1. Load the game and choose your stake with the plus and minus buttons.
2. Tap the menu or i icon and swipe to the paytable.
3. Note the payout bands for each symbol (for example 8–9, 10–11 and 12 or more).
4. Scroll the rules to find the scatter count needed for free spins and the RTP of this version.
5. Return to the reels and tap spin; the game counts matches for you and highlights any win.

Tumbles: one paid spin, several results

After any win, the winning symbols disappear and new ones drop in from above. If the new arrangement creates another win, it tumbles again, and so on until there are no more wins. All of this happens within the single spin you paid for. Our cascading reels entry covers the mechanic in general.

On a phone, tumbles take time to play out, especially in landscape where animations are larger. The 2.5-second minimum applies to each paid spin, not to each tumble, and a spin with a long tumble chain naturally runs longer. Because each tumble helps open the top row, a long chain also improves the layout for the rest of that sequence.

Free spins and held multipliers

Landing enough scatters starts a round of 10 free spins (the rules screen gives the exact scatter count). During the round, multiplier symbols that land are held for the whole round rather than applying only to the spin they appear on, and more than one can be collected. The running total then boosts the wins that follow.

Here is how that might look in pounds. On a 40p stake, say a free spin produces £2 of tumble wins after you have collected multipliers adding up to 6x. That spin would pay £12. If a 4x multiplier lands later and is added to the held total, making 10x, a later £1.50 win would pay £15. A round with no multipliers early on can still finish modestly, which is why the game is rated high volatility.

Progress towards unlocking the top row also carries through the free spins, so the grid can grow as the round goes on. Wisdom of Athena RTP: what 'default' means

Pragmatic Play lists 96.07% as the default RTP. Casinos can choose from lower versions as well, so the figure in your app may be lower. Over a very large number of spins, 96.07% means about £96.07 returned for every £100 staked, keeping roughly £3.93.

These are averages, not predictions. High-volatility games concentrate much of their return into rare rounds, so most short sessions finish below the average and a few finish well above it.
